Hey look! I have a website now. It will have other things eventually, but for right now it has three posts about what I'm calling the St. Paul Death Register Project.

More will come--including MN-specific genealogy work.

It’s a grand shame that I crossed the river…

In a fun (for me) historical note, I’m looking at this site and started laughing when I saw this page.

Why? Well.

My grandfather was the person to compile all of this in one place to publish in 1956. And now I’m rummaging around it because of Minneapolis politics nonsense.
Code of ordinances of the city of St. Paul, Minnesota.
Original publication 1956
Recodification 1979, 1981
Republication 1987

So in St. Paul per their charter, “The mayor shall appoint, with the advice and consent of the council, to the positions of city attorney and all heads of executive departments” (from Sec. 3.01.3.)

I don’t see where the executive departments are defined though.

I don’t know what other cities look like, but I think that the commissioner of health role is one I want the Council to vote on. Probably others as well, but there are real implications to the way that position approaches public health that directly affects residents.

POWER GRAB: 6-5 majority of commissioners on this work group say council shouldn't get a confirmation vote for mayor's picks for directors of public works, community planning/economic development, civil rights, health, emergency management, regulatory services, assessor.

What happens if the person is bad at the job/out of sync with the city? Is the council vote the only point at which there’s a check on the mayor?

Jack’s grandfather (whose name he shares) was a WWII veteran who served in the US military.

I know it doesn’t matter to the crew propping up the radicalism of the administration that they’re twisting history into knots, but it still makes me mad.

Incredible.

Jack Posobiec references the earliest version of antifa -- the anti-fascists in the Weimar Republic who were opposed to the Nazi Party -- as the bad guys.

Seconding David, and agree that it’s a good thing. Many people don’t know their rights, and it’s only a matter of time before the administration tries to replicate Chicago here.

(Deleted/reposted because it read like I was disagreeing with David and wasn’t)

Today’s news is very hell-scapey and I know it’s going to keep going like this, but good lord. We all still have normal, everyday hard things too.

I don’t even know how I say it. Something in between those two? My child and Ohio-born wife make fun of how I say words—especially those that end in an “-ag” sound. Plague, vague, bag. Also milk.

I can’t really hear it.

Wayzata, Mahtomedi, and New Prague are an excellent trio.

The correct MN pronunciation of New Prague drives me bananas.

We’ve got a mouse issue (4 mice in the last couple days).

We also have three cats who are murdering the mice.

Can the mice please tell other mice that we’re the murder house and to stop coming in wherever they’re coming in from?

I just realized the photo was from a fundraiser I was kindly invited to but had to miss. The town is small.

*add. I can spell. I swear.

Also, one thing that is a major problem in the city is guns. Crime exists, but it doesn’t have to be life-threatening. That’s forced on us by the gun lobby and the kind of weapons people have access to.

I appreciate the perspective shift on that propaganda hit piece on MPLS.

The thing I will ad is that with family up north and here, the economic hopelessness up there combined with lies like the Kupchella thing are intended to drive culture war wedges. They’re exploited by wealth. So are we.
Brown: We do live in ‘A Precarious State,’ but place-baiting won’t solve anything
"Aging population? Out-migration? Crime and drugs? Schools not as good as you remember? Welcome to the problems rural Minnesota has been fighting for more than 40 years," Aaron Brown writes.

There’s no way an autonomous car can handle Minnesota winters. That’s an excellent question to pose!

I read it earlier this morning and it’s as upsetting as you imagine it’s going to be. Absolutely unnecessary and devastating suffering.

Probably important that people read this and what is expected by the governor.

Unrelated wish—I wish that comments on Strib articles didn’t exist. It brings nothing to it except the worst people who hate everyone.
Walz says Twin Cities must be ready for Trump to send in National Guard
The Minnesota governor and his Democratic counterpart from Illinois, JB Pritzker, raised alarm about the Republican White House’s push to send the guard into multiple U.S. cities.

Not particularly my problem, mine is a variety of unchangeable high need/intensity aspects of my life that eat up most of my time and energy. Time is one thing you can’t create more of! Also energy, actually.
