Absolutely brilliant talk by @dawnc05.bsky.social today at @learningmet.bsky.social. Not easy to listen to the awful experiences she shares, but so in awe of the Dawn’s commitment to challenge and protest.
Our speaker for today’s @learningmet.bsky.social seminar is our own Dr Dawn Cavanagh, speaking about her organisation’s work for people with learning disabilities & autistic people in locked wards and for independent living. Stolen Lives, Activism & the Role of Academia in Defending Human Rights. 🧵

We are stronger in our activism together. RK has faced racism in campaigning but has had opportunities to help reduce stigma eg speaking on Punjabi TV channels, talking at local schools about allyship. Everyone from marginalised communities should have opportunities to live the best lives possible.

It's important everyone over 14 on their doctor's learning disability register has an annual health check.

They can help you stay well and find any problems early.

If you haven't been offered one you can ask your doctors practice if you can have one.

There was a notion, at the time, that the pandemic would be a great 'leveller'. Now, as LA burns, we see that wealth and privilege is no protector. But 'business as normal' resumes quickly. I'm always wondering what can make us step into another's shoes and truly walk around in them... changing us.
