Abilities like that are a fourth quadrant, almost (splitting on free/costly and chancy/certain), being free (costing only that you can only try the ability once) but chancy,

The system doesn't generate a way for a character to be especially knowledgeable or observant. Admittedly, l/h/s doesn't cover that either; an elf with an ability to detect nearby secret doors x-in-6 gets that info passively (like a landmark), but only sometimes (like a secret)

I like the level requirement thing. It gives a way players can feel like they're playing a skillful and knowledgeable character where the mechanics back that up

So, stuff a character just knows is all either Common (for the character's backgrounds) or stuff they've picked up from an adventure? the mechanics here don't support any other ways a character might already just know something that the player has to be told
