Okay, whose idea was it to make the COSMOS field so big?!
Every time I go through the catalog, my tiny brain is convinced I've done something wrong because there are just SO MANY GALAXIES 🤯😱🤩
Please help

And it's not just black holes we've been finding in our CEERS JWST spectra, but we're also able to measure the distances to galaxies first discovered in our JWST NIRCam images. The papers, led by Seiji Fujimoto and Pablo Arabal Haro, are seeing even further back!

The press release also highlights two other AGNs (active black holes) identified in Dale Kocevski's paper. These two are smaller and not the dominant source of light we detect, speaking to the power of JWST's resolution.

Why is this so interesting? Well, it's the first (of many to come, I hope!) black hole we've detected so early in the Universe. This is possible due to JWST's wavelength coverage (it can see further objects) and sensitivity (it can see fainter ones too)!

Here's a highlight about the black hole, CEERS 1019 that shows the emission from both the host galaxy (purple) and the black hole (yellow) in our CEERS JWST NIRSpec data. Plus, an image from NIRCam where you can make out the multiple physical components!
