social cohesion and the way labor uses, where it can be used as a justification for restricting basic rights and its absence is understood in dark, threatening terms as a kind of anarchy with national security implications, is positively hobbesian

given I've quoted CCDH's work in stories I don't like my prospects for visiting (not that I was planning to for the next few years)
The US just banned a guy from the country (Imran Ahmed) for pointing out that X is full of hate speech
The US is imposing visa restrictions on five Europeans, including Thierry Breton, accusing them of pressuring US tech companies to censor certain US viewpoints (Fatima Hussein/Associated Press)

The “free speech” and “cancel culture” panics have led to overt state censorship because that was always their purpose. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

the australian public understands the lnp to be the anti-woke people, so when they see them parading jews and antisemitism around in a holier than thou way i imagine people are going to be pretty sceptical

i imagine that many of the managers of organisations that cancelled a planned event after receiving a letter claiming one of the speakers was an antisemite believed the authors of those letters to be ultimately reasonable people (who were often peers) who were making specific or localised claims.

Sussan Ley is an aggressive, unhinged fool. Her behaviour during such a sensitive time is deplorable.
Tfw you’re full-throatedly flushing yourself down the political toilet for the rest of eternity.

in nsw, rights are something that the police commissioner is allowed to decide whether or not they exist

there's a somewhat striking contrast between how after october 7, there was a kind of catch-cry among israel's strongest supporters that said "there is no context" for what happened.

compare that to now, where the context is known and asserted immediately: its the human rights protestors.

something weird in the gun control thing is the push by labor to restrict guns to citizens. i mean, im happy with them being restricted full stop, but why immediately single out the citizen vs non-citizen thing? what if a non-citizen is working in a job where a gun is seen as fine for citizens?

maybe something good could come out of all this bad (punitive law relating protests and speech) if the legal changes result in in new high court jurisprudence on the subject of freedom of expression, and this ends up being good rather than bad. i won't be holding my breath.

crazy stuff - deliberate law breaking for decades and as to consequences, well 🤷
Police to decide on the legality of their own secret prison wiretaps
Police will be trusted to decide whether their own conduct was illegal during a secret prison bugging program, with prosecutors saying they will only reassess cases the force flags for review.

damn just realised the two individuals who engaged one of the attackers heroically right at the beginning or before the attack took place and paid for it with their lives are the parents of a friend of mine from high school/uni who i haven't seen in ages.

its interesting how there is a clash, perhaps one that is not unresolvable, between the desire for revenue sharing between platforms and creators - that see them share in the ad revenue they create through their labour - and the way this can incentivise the propagation of falsehoods

just really bad at databasing. these problems were solved in nordic countries in the 60s and 70s

this 75k number apparently comes from the number the overseas terrorist victim fund has used for 15 years, which of course hasn't been indexed to inflation. before victims of crime funds were heavily curtailed, 75k was around the cap they used, so just no logic in the number at all.

the grand australian tradition of ministers hastily devising a law, putting maybe a day's thought into it, and then leaving it on the books for decades is a scourge. its probably more about the ministers and pressure they perceive themselves to be under than about law at all

i would be very surprised if this happened. the CSG has an equivalent in many jewish communities around the world such as france (where antisemitism is higher than in aus) and they are not armed. in the uk when this has been raised after a terrorist attack, the CST itself has opposed it

so the decision review system is weirdly funded by the broadcasters instead of cricket australia or the ICC and in australia the broadcasters have consistenly done business with the business offering the shittier and probably cheaper product
Why 'outdated' Snickometer is STILL used by Australian TV
RICHARD GIBSON: Test cricket is in the hands of its broadcasters when it comes to the use of technology in the decision review system.
