This 350m of river to be piped underground. Impact on Bats, Otters and Fisheries will be permanent, significant and negative according to EIAR. There is an alternative - upstream storage. Public consultation on Blackpool Flood Relief open until 10th October 2025. Link - www.gov.ie/en/departmen...

Nothing weird about it. Kids can't have all the fun stuff for themselves.

Our kids did this. A cool little unlikely adventure.

A few days more tomake a submission on the Blackpool Flood Relief Scheme which proposes to denude the area of yet more biodiversity. #Cork #Speirgorm

Until 10th October to make a submission on the Blackpool (River Bride) Flood Relief Scheme which will concrete over the last stretch of river in Blackpool. This over-engineering would have been out-dated in the 1980s never mind 2025 (Image @saveourbrideotters.bsky.social )

Just a reminder that the developers of the Blackpool Retail Park rerouted the River Bride in 2003 and did not install flood storage to mitigate as had been promised to flooded business owners a few hundred meters downstream in the village. It was also a planning condition. #cork

Otter catching fish in a trout pool on the River Bride last night. This pool will be destroyed and buried in a pipe under the current OPW flood scheme plans. Please make a submission before Oct 10th. See our pinned post for details . #cork

Why the fixation on bike sheds? Far more is being wasted elsewhere. It’s just populist bullshit. P.S I love my bike.

That’s nothing. I saw a guy on a scooter carrying a flat-pack Wendy house down the N20. I was awestruck.

Read that over Christmas to balance out any excess feelings of joy and hope.

Our little River Bride kingfisher is back again. Ten minutes of scoping from the stick and a catch. Sound up for the 'thunks' as the fish is slapped into submission before being swallowed whole. #Cork

Ah. I was not thinking of number ones…

Either direction on this stretch will require careful consideration by cyclists beforehand.

A good piece in the Echo by Tom MacSweeney . The picture of a River Bride otter was taken by our trusty hardworking trail camera. #cork

A reminder that the OPW could not find a kingfisher on our lovely River Bride in Blackpool. All they really needed was a magic kingfisher stick and a highly motivated individual to find them. Filmed this evening. It wasn’t difficult. #cork

Otter fishing from a trout pool whilst you are all getting ready for bed. It’s completely dark here. Just using its whiskers, paws, tail, teeth, instinct…and what its mother taught it…to survive. Video quality shit. What can you do. #cork

Three people riding bicycles were killed on Irish roads last week.

The most recent, a 27 year old woman from Japan, who had just started working in Cork.

The oldest was a man in his 80s. The driver did not stop.

The government is:

❌ Failing to provide good quality active transport infrastructure
❌ Failing to introduce a 30 km/h default urban speed limit
❌ Failing to protect people

Make no mistake, the rise in people being killed is not an accident — it’s the result of political choices.
Road deaths are going down - but more cyclists and pedestrians are being killed. Why?
The number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths is now at the highest level in six years.

Poor OPW couldn’t find any Kingfishers on the River Bride. We try to be as helpful as possible and have temporarily turned our trail camera attentions away from otters to focus on kingfishers. We present this little bum waggy specimen filmed on the Bride on Wednesday. #cork

It happened again.
Glashaboy flood relief scheme in Glanmire cost overrun is 316%
From €12m budget to €38m cost.
This is typical for OPW FRS works.
Upstream storage would have been a fraction of this, less than €5m.
Now multiply this by hundreds of projects.

Concern that cost of Glanmire flood work could impact other Cork relief schemes
In 2012, a severe flood caused tens of millions of euro worth of damage to 82 homes and 30 businesses in Glanmire and Sallybrook.

Every cloud has a silver lining with the OPW and their advisors. Take this fine example from the Environmental Impact Assessment for the Blackpool Flood Scheme #cork. Please make a submission before October 10th 2025 here: www.gov.ie/en/departmen...
