As one of the largest annual animal migrations on the planet, the Sardine Run hosts a vast number of fish prey species moving from cool waters to warm waters, which attracts impressive numbers of predators that all feast on the small, journeying fish.

Oriental sweetlips are regular clients at reef cleaning stations where tiny blue-streak cleaner wrasse clean, remove parasites, dead skin, and debris from larger fish. This behaviour is an example of mutualism where both benefit.

Two barbels project downward from the blunt snout of this juvenile leopard catshark. These barbels help them locate prey on nocturnal hunts, in the warmer coastal waters of South Africa, where they're resident to the rocky reefs and the kelp forests.

Satellite tracking of nomadic silky sharks shows they spend about half their time beyond the borders of Eastern Tropical Pacific marine reserves. Beyond this safety, this 'Vulnerable' species is threatened by overfishing.

Threatened by commercial fisheries and the global fin trade, silky sharks of the Eastern Tropical Pacific marine reserves are highly vulnerable as research shows they spend about half their time beyond the safety of the reserve.

Clutched in their mother’s protective embrace, the eggs of peacock mantis shrimp are aerated for roughly 11 weeks before they start life as tiny larvae. Red or pink in colour, these clutches can be as large as 50,000 eggs! It seems that even in the ocean, motherhood is serious business.

Male Mexican hogfish are easily recognisable by the pronounced hump between the eyes and display a colour pattern distinct from females: a greyish body tinged with red, marked by a yellow bar near the midsection.

The spiky crown-of-thorns starfish is a wonder to look at. Adorned in bright colours and interesting spikes, these sea stars are native to coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific region and the Great Barrier Reef, where they hide under ledges and reef nooks and crannies.

As night descends on the reef of Costa Rica, whitetip reef sharks pursue their prey. Small and slender, they scour the crevices, wriggling into tight spaces. They are specialists in hunting bony fishes and cephalopods using scent, sound and electroreception.

Highly revered for their majestic beauty, and highly exploited for their products, the relationship between reef manta rays and humans is conflicted. As demand rises for the gill plates of manta rays, hope persists in ecotourism, where humans want to see them at sea.

When the sun sets, the fimbriate moray leaves it lair to hunt fish and crustaceans on the reefs of the Indo-Pacific. They have a row of large, backward-curved canine teeth running along the roof of their mouths which they use to grip slippery prey.

The reefs surrounding D'Arros Island teem with life, a refuge for the interconnected marine ecosystems found here. On this coral reef, a grey reef shark is foregrounded by a school of snappers as it swims by.

A true oddity of the sea, the red-lipped batfish has evolved adaptations perfect for a life on the seafloor. Its pectoral and pelvic fins have evolved into 'legs' that allow it to waddle along the bottom.
