A fun afternoon in primary school: owls got new names—Tawny was crowned the Invisible Owl, LEO became the Bunny Owl 🐰🦉. After much debate (and giggles), the final poll crowned the Barn Owl as the kids’ favourite. Democracy in action, feathered edition!

Thanks to one of our brilliant Barn Owl people for this gem — adult owl checking out its old nest box. ✨Young have flown, house is empty, and it looks like they’re moving back in for the winter. ❄️ A true case of ‘returning to the nest’ 🦉 @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Six shiny new barn owl boxes are flying the nest today, off to their new homes thanks to our brilliant band of volunteers. Not sure if the owls requested ensuite facilities, but we’ve done our best! 🦉🏡 @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

"Radio-tracking of 19 juvenile Barn Owls in England revealed different spatial patterns for males and females, that tree branches were frequent roost sites, and that altitudinal distribution changed after owls acquired home ranges."

In what’s turning out to be one of the toughest years for Barn Owls in a long time, it’s truly heartwarming to receive footage like this from one of our monitored boxes—a small but shining reminder of hope and resilience in the wild 🦉@suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

We are delighted that UKPN have chosen to install a Barn Owl box on one of their sites. It’s a fantastic location with excellent surrounding habitat 🌱 and we’re really hopeful that Barn Owls will take up residence in the future. 🦉 @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

An amazing Dark-Breasted Barn Owl has been spotted in Lincolnshire since February 🤩 This 'guttata' sub species is found in mainland Europe, but very rarely some cross the North Sea from Belgium, Germany, Denmark or The Netherlands to winter or breed in the UK with our 'alba' birds 🧡🦉

Barn owls are nesting—shhh! But we’re still putting up boxes like overenthusiastic landlords! They’re perfect for roosting, second broods or a bachelor pad! No vacancy signs not required—yet!

Barn owls are hopefully nesting now, but we’re still installing boxes in good spots—fingers crossed they’ll be used for roosting or even a second brood later in the season! 🦉@suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

What is a Barn Owl home range? 🦉🏠🌳
It's the area a Barn Owl uses for hunting, roosting & breeding. Barn Owls are non-territorial & their home ranges are huge - expanding up to 5000 hectares in winter, which is more than 7000 football pitches!⚽
