Q: Do you agree that the mayor of Chicago and governor of Illinois should be in prison?

MIKE JOHNSON: Should they be in prison? I'm not the attorney general. I'm not following the day to day on that

This Reuters headline. Oof.

Fascism isn't 'coming.' It's HERE.

Another day.

Another presidential threat to jail two of his political opponents.

What will it take for Republicans in Congress to speak out?

While we still have a democracy left.

UAE has no democratically elected institutions, no free speech and an appalling human rights record.

Its economy functions on completely different metrics to the ours & ranks well below us for GDP

No serious person would ever think that we should emulate it.

But here's Tice calling us decadent

But that's the tragedy of this all - it should have been such a positive and good thing for this country that she became leader of the Conservative party, even if one isn't a Tory, because of all the barriers that *have* been broken down in the last 50 years 😟

I can only add to this that when I had to go to hospital in Leigh in February I had the most wonderful doctors and nurses of all ethnic groups looking after me and they were talking about potentially having a Saturday chippy tea that day. I see bad-faith 'integration' arguments a mile off
stephenkb.bsky.social
No, it's not. It's all a lie. The blunt truth is across the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them.

Outstanding piece by Stephen Daisley.

Ethnicity is no barrier to Britishness - it's culture and integration.

That means 'smaller cohorts and aggressive integration policies' - and tackling the institutions that 'have amplified grievance narratives and radical anti-Western ideologies'.

Also I have just remembered Robert Plant talking about how in the 1960s he was eating Indian food with his wife's family in one part of the West Midlands and then Caribbean goat curry in another, and how this was invaluable to his personal development. Where has Jenrick been all his life? Mars?

Spot on from @stephenkb.bsky.social. And the other aspect of this nasty turn is the eliding of British ‘culture’ with ‘white British’, which will shock anyone who has watched TV or football, or listened to music, or read a book, or indeed breathed since 1980.

Back to the Conservative thing about shitting on English degrees. One of the best pieces of television in recent years was the Derry Girls episode where Ma Mary decides she wants to do an English degree, because it is about love *and* empowerment ('There's nothing you can't do, love', says Da Gerry)

Think my vote is only going one way now and that's not with a great deal of pleasure at how this is playing out
scandifriend.bsky.social
Yes, and as my wife pointed out not so long ago, things like long shadows on the cricket ground and warm beer (or real ale at least) *still exist now* so there's some continuity in his vision. Doesn't mean it is the best vision. But it is miles better than what his successors are proffering

Part of Robin Cohen's 2000 review article “The Incredible Vagueness of Being British/English" discusses Major's speech in terms of his disappointment that his Cabinet colleagues followed Thatcher's rules rather than, like him, Thomas Arnold's romantic view of country - seems an even crueler lot now.

Community, not communion. Feel like a right deagle when people kindly repost this one a lot and I have failed to use the right words in the process. Apologies

Again back to my belief that Major's much-derided 1990s speech about long shadows on the cricket ground, warm beer and maids cycling to community is in actual fact a very valid and positive view of small c conservatism. The Conservatives as they are now just hate people and the country in general

If you want to win over younger voters, telling them they can't go to university is probably not going to help.

Lord Glasman explaining how Blue Labour and Green Labour are in actual fact the same thing and that 'send them all home' was taken out of context because it meant 'and then bring them back to build wind farms and electric cars as and when the demand allows' but others missed the nuance

So much of this is about the search for status - one reason why I am dubious about 'Reform will fail in office' is 'there are still loads of immigrants, but don't worry, they will never be equal citizens, and a bunch of minorities who are currently equal will feel precarious' is the deal here.

Can a reporter please ask him why? Because they never do when politicians say this. *Why* wouldn't you use those words? Because they are racist? If not, what's wrong with them?
scandifriend.bsky.social
And again, the key word there is 'how'. Journalists can no longer ask 'who/what/where/when/why?' They have to ask 'how?' if they are to challenge precepts and empower and take a stand for the citizens whom they are meant to be serving through their reportage, not just be stenographers

Am wondering if all of those suddenly deciding they’re against communities living “parallel lives” might reconsider their support of religious schools? Or indeed private ones?
