Good morning! I wrote a biography of someone who helped found the women's rights movement in the 1850s, and kept at it through the Civil War, scandals, chronic illness, and decades of defeats.
Amelia Bloomer
A fascinating look at an underappreciated woman in American history whose newspaper fostered a national conversation on women’s issues. Those who recognize the name Amelia Bloomer usually do so because...

Libraries all over the world trade books and other items in their collections for study and intellectual exchange. Tariffs are about to isolate US libraries, some of whom have books out that they can't get back now.
Libraries Can’t Get Their Loaned Books Back Because of Trump’s Tariffs
Libraries have shared their collections internationally for decades. Trump’s tariffs are throwing that system into chaos and can ‘hinder academic progress.’

Yesterday I did a book event at the Opendore house at the Howland Stone Store Museum in Sherwood NY, for a knowledgeable and lively audience of about 20. Great discussion afterwards! I'll have to go back, there's some treasure in their archive, including a gorgeous suffrage poster collection.
Large framed poster of a beautiful young woman in cap and gown holding the padlock of a small fenced enclosure which also holds a large grim looking man in convict uniform and a smaller man sticking out his tongue. A sign in front of them says Convicts and Lunatics have no vote for parliament Should All Women Be Classed With These? and above the woman: She: it is time I got out of this place. Where shall I find the key? On the outside of the fence are a stack of books strapped together.

College radio stations are seeing a surge in student interest.

Stations that once struggled to fill airtime are now overflowing with student DJs.

I spoke to 7 college radio stations across the U.S. to understand what is driving the revival:

This would be why I am such a strident critic of digitization as a substitute for actual archival preservation. My sixteenth century documents are far sturdier and likely to survive another 500 years than the detritus on the internet. And digitization is not democratization.

If I could get non-autistic people to understand one thing, it wouldn't be that I have support needs. It would be that YOU have support needs.

calling autism a “tragedy” and saying that there should be fewer autistic people are eugenicist talking points. Everyone who opposes such views also needs to recognize the ways in which everyday ableism left the door wide open for a person like RFK Jr.

we aren’t going to be able to make up for what they’re stealing from people who need it. but setting up a recurring donation—whatever you can afford—to your local food bank is one of the easiest & most effective ways to help people in your community. find one near you:

I cancelled Disney+ and Hulu the same day this came out! My animator sent me the link to this pilot of a new series by a popular ex-Disney director. Gorgeous human-drawn 2D animation, with sharp points aimed at the Kingdom.

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing.

These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

wait, do we need "affordable housing" or do we need public housing? They convinced yall to excise public housing from your brain (the power of anti-Blackness in the American politic) even though public housing exists and is successful, often beautiful, ALL OVER THE WORLD.

In 2002, I tried to explain how Jesse James, son of a preacher & a prosperous family, turned to murdering his neighbors. I showed how increasingly toxic politics poisoned his community. We see it again. Now those in power are using every means to silence dissent. Both very bad & very dangerous.
