I started doing this a few years ago--when I read a great scholarly article, for example, I will drop a note to the author telling them how good I think it is. Especially if the author is a junior person. It takes two minutes and is a nice affirmation.

2/ I would also *really* recommend Elaine Frantz Parson's "Ku Klux," which basically sketches out how accusations of "fake news" were weaponized in the nineteenth century.
