Guy I used to play football with claimed his uncle had been in the IRA (not, in itself, a major bit of news where I'm from) but had to quit after a bombing he did that left him with no outward signs of trauma, save the fact he had to "eat all his meals standing up" (a dazzling additional detail).

Fence #26 will be a special on all things print, and in tribute to the storied history of the UK gutter press, our letters page wants your GOSSIP & SCANDAL.

So, we're asking you all: what was the most scandalous (true or false) bit of gossip that dominated your school or neighbourhood growing up?

Because it feels relevant as we continue to evaluate the media and our representatives’ statements, my favorite way to identify the active vs. passive voice.
A post by Rebecca Johnson:
“I finally learned how to teach my guys to ID the passive voice. If you can insert "by zombies" after the verb, you have passive voice.”

A tumblr respond from mightymur:
“The final, brilliant word on passive voice.
"She was killed [by zombies.]"<--passive
"Zombies killed [by zombies] her." <-- active”

Amongst other things, at some point someone had sprayed PINSHON IS A CUNT on the wall outside the end of the main hall. Mr Pinshon being the deputy head. It had been scrubbed off but was still visible. Frankly if I were the head I would have had the wall painted or the bricks sanded. Anyway...

Also...
New council offices were built in the early 80s
Rumour had it that
A) there was a nuclear shelter in the basement (true)
B) that in the event of nuclear war the people who would go into it were local councillors and school dinner ladies with the aim of repopulating the county (unlikely)

Lad at my school made two grave mistakes. The first: he bookmarked a porn site on his family computer but renamed the bookmark to “Capital FM”, which his mum clicked on. The second, fatal: he told people at school, which led to “Capital FM” being his nickname and me recounting this 15 years later

One of our school vicars resigned after his wife threw him and his belonings out of the house in full view of the boys walking to chapel. She had apparently been willing to forgiven the long affair right up until she found out about the a ten year old daughter produced by it.

There was technical graphics teacher in our school who it was rumoured had been on a game show and that he had lost out by answering “Dennis Thatcher” to some question. This led to people yelling “BEEEEPPPP Dennis Thatcher” at him and it made him so mad he used to smash T-squares over his desk

There was an older lad nicknamed “Chicken” at school who was supposed to have shagged a frozen chicken. It wasn’t clear what happened first though. His nickname or the alleged incident. Quite the scenario.

My English teacher was married to a minister. She was physically assaulted and had her shoes stolen at a gas station by a foot fetishist. We knew this because the teacher had wallpapered his classroom with the news articles about it, which made it very clear the worst details were not fit to print
