Everyone needs to stop freaking out about Trump and face the fact that WWIII is here, and it's only going to escalate during his term. However much you hate him, he's the only President we've got now.

I voted for Clinton in 2016, Biden in 2020, and Harris in 2024. In each case, I was voting *against* Trump rather than for his opponent. But he's won now, and handily, and though I have grave concerns about his fitness, I do not think he is the biggest threat we face.

I despise what Russia is doing to Ukraine as much as anyone but Elbridge Colby is probably right that China has to be our priority. It is entirely possible that Russia and China have been planning a squeeze play from the beginning.

It has astonished me to see a small but vocal minority of Americans seriously advocating for monarchy. As I see it, there can be no more fundamental betrayal of what it means to be an American. Even segregationists and communists are more authentically American than monarchists.

Commentary in #theatlantic today to the effect that there's "zero national security reason" for the US to resume control of the Panama Canal is naive. If we control the canal, we can weaponize it: our friends get through, our enemies can go another 8000 miles and try their luck in the Drake Passage.

I am begging otherwise-smart people to realize that often the answer to “I just saw something enraging on social media, why have I never heard about it before” is “because it’s not true.”

Conspiracy hypothesis: China knows it can only take Taiwan by force if it does so quickly, which will be much more likely if it can achieve strategic surprise. But this is not 1944, and Taiwan is not Normandy. How to surprise your enemy in an age of smartphones and ubiquitous overhead surveillance?

Somebody tell Trump to tell Bezos to let me filter my Amazon search results by county of manufacture. If I want to buy American it should be as easy as ticking a little box next to "USA."

It occurred to me today that a person can be a Christian in the same sense that a person can be an Aristotelian or a Cartesian or a Jeffersonian--that is, in the sense of subscribing to the philosophy of Jesus, without necessarily accepting the personal divinity of Jesus himself.

I am not sympathetic to Trump's immigration agenda but it says something about the state of the debate that this sentence can appear in the New York Times: "Throughout his campaign, and during his first term, Mr. Trump often portrayed all migrants crossing the border illegally as criminals."

Russia will only be free when the chekist cabal that has secretly controlled the Kremlin at least since Dzerzhinsky, and which is now formally institutionalized as the FSB, has been completely purged.

Naming a proposed law after a dead person, particularly a child, is fundamentally a demand that everyone be credulous, unquestioning, and obedient.
It may be even simpler than that: No politician dares vote against terrible policy with untold downstream consequences for many—for the simple fact that it's named after a victim of an unspeakable/inexcusable act of violence.

God help us all if that's all it takes to create criminal legal policy.

It will probably be impossible for China to conceal its short-term preparations for invading Taiwan. However, they could try to stage an outbreak of viral hemorrhagic fever in order to do so. Quarantine could mask all kinds of logistics, including massive blood drives, that would otherwise be tells.

My take on the UAP/UFO phenom is that it has always been a psyop. The important part of the story is not that aliens are among us but *that the US government has recovered alien technology.* The point is to introduce additional uncertainty among near-peer military competitors about our capabilities.
