Walking through a second hand book store should feel like you’re flying through the trench run on the Death Star.
Walking through a second hand book store and books are stacked all around creating a grebled pathway, such that it feels like you’re flying through the trench run on the Death Star.

Ha ha — this got a like from @redblobgames.com … yeh they’ve done a lot more with grids than I ever have!

Gregor Samsa awoke from a night of uneasy dreams to find the tech world is abuzz with a prediction that, 3 years from now, OpenStink will achieve AGI and perform bullshit work at *TWICE* the speed of a modern bureaucrat!

I contain multitudes. Or, as we say in science, a microbiome.

I must acknowledge that I am uncharacteristically and perhaps unreasonably riled up by this paper, but to double down on my "dying on this hill" -- here's a word cloud of all the times "cognitive {x}" is used in the paper, for different values of x.

It's such an utter load of "cognitive slop"!
Word cloud showing some of the 40+ terms like "cognitive load", "cognitive debt" "cognitive process" etc that are used almost entirely without definition, and entirely without an accurate, valid, relevant definition. When in doubt... just say cognitive a bit more!

Agree to disagree on this paper. How does their novel test have any validity, to be able to make such strong and sweeping claims?

Its claims may be true… but the “science” they’ve used to get there is not able to support any such claims.

This is preprint un-reviewed stuff.

As an underling, I always found the threat “be quiet or I’ll replace you with a very simple cron job” to be effective at keeping middle-managers in line.

The alleged neuroscience behind this preprint is really very spectacularly shitty.

The article is getting so much attention but they didn’t do the science properly.

I’ll follow up with a podcast link in a moment.

It’s every parent’s nightmare, isn’t it? you check your child’s bulletproof backpack and find a picture book about gay penguins

Ordinarily I think Labor can rest on being just 1 half step to the left of the major RWNJ parties. Suddenly, with no strong opposition on the right, they have to stand on their own feet and get into actual policy debates with other parties.

At least: that’s what I hope will happen. Please 🙏

I used to believe, there’s no “i” in Teamwork. Google set me straight.
Google’s AI overview states ‘The letter “i” appears twice in the word “teamwork”.’

My eyes be leaking. Stop it Mann.

While writing this I overheard someone say to someone else — regarding their computer — ‘all my letters are in capitals except the “i”’s.’

This alone unleashes chains of thought, uncovers other curses. I wonder if it relates to the Turkish alphabet. I wonder why we even have “capital letters”.

I sent this skoot prematurely as I was late for a thing. I wanted to hone in on the topic of typography in particular. Knowledge of typography leads to opinions on typography which leads to misery.

I was going to say “except curses” but you’ve proven me wrong there. Cues you!

As Shakespeare says “There are sermons in books, stones in the running brooks,” or rather, the other way about, and there you have it, in a nutshell.
