Anticipating changes to the 25/26 Covid-19 vaccine regulations @sefyfe.bsky.social & I updated our previous analysis of off-label pediatric Covid-19 vaccination. It is out now in @jamapediatrics.com & accessible here.

Many things happened since we submitted this! I'll touch on a few of them 🧵
Reconsidering Off-Label Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccination
This Viewpoint discusses current factors to consider when recommending off-label pediatric COVID-19 vaccination.

In JAMA Pediatrics with @ethicselizabeth.bsky.social on how to think about off-label vaxx for kids in these confusing times
ethicselizabeth.bsky.social
"Off-label vaccination is not a widespread public health strategy.... However, vaccinating children off-label is an ethically & legally supportable tool at a time when other tools are being removed from the toolkit."

“I’m emotionally shellshocked right now,” said one professor in the Texas Tech system. “What does it say about academic freedom? It says we don’t have it.” The professor spoke by phone from the inside of a car to avoid being overheard by colleagues.

A brief commentary by @sefyfe.bsky.social & me in AJOB discusses why invoking the specter of regret in medical decision making, even about about potentially "transformative experiences," risks undermining patient autonomy.

As with attempts to limit access to reproductive choices (see below paper in Hypatia with @ethicselizabeth.bsky.social), these legislators care a lot about imposing gender norms, and they use anticipatory regret (based on their OWN values) to justify the impositions.

Out just in time to preempt Thomas’s opinion in Skrmetti, in which he disagrees with everything I say. On why gender affirming care is necessary for kids (and adults), and what recent limitations suggest about the legislators seeking them: ir.law.utk.edu/rgsj/vol14/i...

Apparently this quote from RFK jr. was about kids with autism, but this is also true of kids who die from vaccine-preventable illnesses.
gbbranstetter.bsky.social
RFK Jr. wants to eradicate autistic people and also has no idea what an autistic person is
"These are kids who will never pay taxes," Kennedy declared. "They'll never hold a
job. Theyl never play baseball. They'Il never write a poem. They'll never go out
" on a date. Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted. We have to recognize
doing this to our children.

Incredible news on TDOV.

The 9th Circuit has denied the government’s request to enforce its transgender military ban.

Supporting bathroom, sports and healthcare bans for trans people means signing on to a moral panic about problems that DON'T EXIST.

When people say Democrats should "moderate" on these issues, they are suggesting that we legislate a group out of public life based on lies.

New newsletter: The majority does not like this, and as I wrote Sunday we can make that matter when we act. And we are acting--it's far from enough yet, but it's also far from nothing (and likely more than they bargained for)... The rest at: www.meditationsinanemergency.com/notes-on-not...
I have faith in the American people--faith that we're an unruly, insubordinate bunch scattered across a vast swathe of land, from our beautifully diverse cities to our remotest rural communities, that we are not easy to subdue and control, that even those who have supported the current authoritarian cult will not like losing some of the federal government's services that make our lives livable, that we have more power than is recognized and that some of us are already organizing to use it.
Protests and organizing of all kinds are happening, from high-school student walkouts to protest attacks on immigrants to demonstrations in front of hospitals from New York to Los Angeles that are complying with the malicious order suspending gender-affirming care for young trans people.

Cecile Richards fought tirelessly for healthcare and chosen futures. May her spirit carry us through more dark days to come.
ethicselizabeth.bsky.social
Like many others, I too am glad I got to thank Cecile Richards for having an impact on my ability to have planned parenthood.

With my fabulous friend @sefyfe.bsky.social in Nashville back in 2017 (when we were doing this all for the first time - may Cecile’s energy remain with us for the second).
Cecile Richards (tall, short blond hair, gorgeous in a black sheath dress) standing in the middle of two smiling women - both white, the one in the left on a black dress and gray blazer, with blond loosely curled hair to her collar bone, the one on the right in a gray top and red cardigan with an abstract watercolor like fabric on it, wearing cat eye glasses and a necklace that is like a cuff with big rough stones on each end, and her brown hair in a bun high on her head.

I can't fully articulate how worried I am for trans people of all ages. It feels like the world doesn't care.
erininthemorning.com
Politico is reporting Trump will name Dr. Ladapo of Florida to a senior spot, likely Surgeon General or Assistant HHS.

This would be a horrifying pick for trans people. He's responsible for Florida's adult trans ban, and works with SEGM/Anti-trans global movement.

He's also an ardent anti-vaxxer.

When people say,
"we have made it
through worse before"
— Clint Smith

all I hear is the wind slapping against the gravestones
of those who did not make it, those who did not survive to see the confetti fall from the sky, those who did not live to watch the parade roll down the street.,
I have grown accustomed to a lifetime of aphorisms
meant to assuage my fears, pithy sayings meant to convey that everything ends up fine in the end. There is no solace in rearranging language to make a different word
tell the same lie. Sometimes the moral arc of the universe does not bend in a direction that will comfort us.
Sometimes it bends in ways we don't expect & there are
people who fall off in the process. Please, dear reader.

do not say I am hopeless, I believe there is a better future
to fight for, I simply accept the possibility that I may not live to see it. I have grown weary of telling myself lies

that I might one day begin to believe. We are not all left
standing after the war has ended. Some of us have
become ghosts by the time the dust has settled.
