"The normalisation of decline, the quiet acceptance of humiliation, and the patronising insistence that there were “positives” to take from a 52-point loss. Really? "

Welsh Rugby: What Went Wroger?
November 6, 2025 at 6:00 PM
"Remember when the WRU got to the end of the 70s, made no plans for the future and assumed they'd just magic great players out of thin air at will? Then had a 25-year horrorshow?

Well. They did it again."

Ooh, look!

It's only @squidgerugby.bsky.social displaying "Welsh Rugby: What Went Wrong?" while discussing the latest shenanigans.

Joyously, two years after publication, things are only going wronger.

Buy it, and drive yourselves into an impotent rage, here:

Paul Thorburn says hi.

(And then goes on to say some dodgy stuff about nationality and rugby's eligibility rules).

Rather splendidly, the WRU's press release today contains some hyperlinks to..well, it's not quite clear where, really.

I'm going for David Moffett and Former Cambodia Dictator Pol Pot.

As a for instance, these are from the Sunday Telegraph in May 1989. Neath's cup final win over Llanelli (cup matches counted towards these tables) secured the English-Welsh title for them, but they lost out in the Welsh table to Llanelli.

Changing the narrative on suicide requires systemic change. It's about shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support.

Not all rugby programme ads of the 80s went for the "try" gag.

Some went for the tackle. 1/

I don't know why, but this reminded me of the 'Absolutely' sketch in which Stoneybridge Parish Council made a promotional video in support of their bid to host the Olympics.

"We have...facilities!".

Then a bonkers question which lurches from "yeah, I'd like us to win mun" questions to this: 5/

How about this massively leading question? 3/

The WRU Consultation document is an absolute doozy.

Extremely vague questions, devoid of context, for the most part.

Like this one: 1/

I absolutely adore this insurance brokers ad from the 1983 Newbridge-Japan programme.

Reduced rates for over-50s! 'Special facilities (?) for breathalyzer 'victims! Special rates for Datsun cars and the NCB!

Peak 80s nostalgia.
