I’ve been doing some form of social media for decades, since Gaia Online was a major network. I don’t start with a topic or a celebrity. I start with goobers, and those goobers get to be my world, and I a part of theirs. I have never found a word filter to match a people filter.

I’ll meet a glutton for gluttons for punishment who pulls me into a fighting game, a chimera who sings and raps, a bard and a storyteller who read The Odyssey with me, and dozens of others.

And it all starts with that one prolific person. That one cliquey friend group.

And Lulz giving me reason to question why I’m here, why I approach social media the way I do? That also helps. Because I like it here, consistently and unironically. Maybe I’m using it wrong: I’ll never be big or popular.

But I also can’t live on ragebait and strangers being rude to each other. There exist too many wonderful, funny, skilled and creative people I’d miss out on spending time paying attention to the Chili Kid saying he likes waffles. It just… doesn‘t help me.

But Kanna’s doodles do. Ness’ books do.

And sometimes I check the wider news because I need to know if my son is going to be zip-tied next or if it’s safe to leave the house without my green card and birth certificate and passport and two letters from senators vouching for me.

I can’t escape everything.

I allow some politics and depressed people because even if not every message they send is for me, I feel better for seeing them. I’m stronger for hearing Lulz’ struggles, but don’t need to be stung by a relative stranger their friend knows for making a joke that didn’t land.

I could mute VTubers in general, but then I’d miss when Road posts a go-live or Flannel asks for VTuber art for a tier list, and I’d still have to see when some rabbit I’ve never heard of starts screaming in German on main because nobody used tags and everyone uses euphemistic names when angry.

That’s one idea. I find that for me, the kinds of people I follow tend not to talk about things I don’t care about: I enjoy May’s rants about 40K or your teasing fun. I like books and dogs and creepers with human legs. I like Canadian satire.

But 90% of the VTuber discourse isn’t relevant to me.

I dunno, maybe I’m doing YouTube wrong, but Twitch pays the bills better and my audience seems to be more from networking than anything. I’ll add it to my list of “if they ever implement UBI” list of tasks.

Fair. I know my videos aren‘t particularly popular on YouTube and tend to get tens to hundreds of times the hits on Twitch even when they’re only up for a week or two, though. Heck, my Reading Renegades vod that aborted 15 minutes in has more views than 60% of my YouTube content…

Al was raised in a loving family of absolute nerds. His dad's a physicist. His sister and mom were more into psych: listening to the two of them made him more open to social sciences. He still mostly believes his wits justify his actions, but he wouldn't be here without his family's love & support.
