When I hear colleagues mock them it breaks me cause I know what it's like to feel like you aren't welcome due to something often beyond control...

Oh, absolutely!
(In my particular case, I’m not even thinking about the vaccines that undoubtedly have helped me gain adulthood; I’m thinking about numerous surgeries, some of which the techniques have only been developed during my lifetime.)
