Michael But Chilly for January

Old movies, old guitars, old records, old books, old photos.
I’m sorry! I watched it on the PBS app and saw it was on Prime but I didn’t realize it was an extra charge. But I’m happy to hear you were resourceful enough to find it.

Years ago I was in a railway cafe in a Cornwall village and there was a plaque on one of the tables that said that Jenny Agutter once sat there and had a cup of tea when her train broke down.

Being danced to death by Simone Simon, as he was in The Devil and Daniel Webster, would not be a bad way to go.

Would anyone have paid any attention to the Amityville House if those windows had been a different shape?

It will always be the Post Office Tower to me.

I needed a photo of a particular guitar for a book. I couldn’t find one but I did find a place that had a catalog with a good illustration of it but they wanted a fortune to use it. It was cheaper to buy the actual guitar and photograph it. I later resold it for $50 more than I paid for it.

Fun Nothing would be a good name for a Twee Rock group.

I totally missed that. I’ll give it a listen ASAP. I just saw that two early Newley movies are coming out on blu-ray from Indicator. (Jazz Boat and Idle on Parade) They’re from the pre-Beatles era which is a fascinating time. I’m guessing they aren’t great but they should be interesting.

Thanks! That sounds right up my alley. I’ll try and track it down. And I suspect he’s a little too far removed from rock, but Anthony Newley would have made a good bonus episode. I can hear his influence on the more theatrical British performers from that period, particularly young Bowie.

Interesting. As I said, I can’t wait to listen to this one. I’ve become really interested in the gentler, slightly psychedelic music of the late 1960s like early Bowie, Stevens, Nilsson, the Bonzos, Tiny Tim and so forth. I’m learning it’s a thin line between whimsical and unbearably twee.
