Got this really cool, ghostly picture by accident the other day in Dillon Beach, CA. It is a Heermann's gull with both it's shadow and reflection.

Juvenile Heermann's gull (very dark all over) in flight, flying over very very shallow water. Flying to the right maybe two feet off the ground. It's shadow is to the right. Just below the shadow is a reflection on the sheen of water.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.

For your delectation, a goth arachnid: Propachylus fornicatus.

This animal is a harvestman - the boys (shown left) were originally described as a different genera to the girls (shown right).

For #FossilFriday check out these ~100 million year old spiders from South Korea. They were probably preserved when rivers washed their remains into large lakes/basins associated with the plate tectonic movements of the time.

A plate of eleven fossil spiders in a dark shale/slate, which is grey to blackey-red. The fossil spiders are generally white or light in colour. They're generally pretty leggy spiders, with small bodies, and in a variety of different poses Scale bar = 1mm if you're interested. My absolute fave is in panel E. What a gorgeous animal.
