Gaming Fyx podcaster, Nintendo World Report Associate Editor. General nerd about town. Ask me how you too can get into the Atelier series!
Larian isn’t some single developer, they have hundreds of employees and all the Baldur’s Gate 3 money, they have artists on staff, use them. And if a writer or dev need to sketch something out, do stick figures, it’s not that hard

Placeholder text doesn’t need to be AI generated, just throw in a Lorem Ipsum or “(INSERT REAL TEXT HERE) and the job is done. A writer needs to get a concept across? Get a pen and paper. It doesn’t have to be good, this storyboard image from Knives Out is one of my favorites

Ultimately my stance is that if generated AI assets make it into the final game I’ll likely not pick it up so Larian using it in preproduction stuff likely wouldn’t stop me but it is disappointing because it just is so unnecessary.

Limitations can help make art really great. Or truly great artists can move past these limitations to make something great with it. So when people act like we need AI due to limitations it makes me laugh - we didn’t need that for art to be made for millennia, why now?

A lot of the graphics look so rough and you can tell they were figuring out how to do 3D graphics in a game as they went, but the ambition in the writing and storytelling makes it shine above the jank, and makes you appreciate all the hard work they did to make this game.

When Harry Met Sally in particular is one of those movies that I wondered before watching how it aged but then it was this warm, deeply funny and enjoyable movie.

Final Fantasy 7 proves you can have it all with the genuine horror of following in Sephiroth’s wake and then following it up by defeating a boss by having a fat chocobo fall on its head, like this is what gaming should be

I’m just hoping the new Steam VR system is cheap enough where I can finally play Alyx….

I was very much a Nintendo kid growing up and didn’t have an original PlayStation (and only got a PS2 late in its lifespan) so it’s fun to experience something I KNOW would have blown my childhood mind if I had played it at the time.
