Starmer went hard against Farage in his conference speech. But has he done enough to show he’s in control, or is the Labour messaging still all over the place?

Under UK law, a company can make £200m+ in sales and still hide its profit & loss by calling itself “small”.

That’s how PPE Medpro kept its finances secret.

A short thread on one of Britain’s daftest loopholes, the 1970s EU compromise that created it — and how to fix it.

Douglas Barrowman and Michelle Mone's company, PPE Medpro, has just been ordered to refund the Government £122m from a PPE contract.

There are two very odd things about PPE Medpro that may affect the odds of the Government ever getting that £122m...

Since Saturday I've been here in Liverpool covering the Labour Party conference for @openDemocracy getting a feel for the many different fringes on the ground, talking to Labour members and activists, and this is what I make of it so far.

If you read just one thing on ID cards, then make it this piece by Ian Dunt - it’s fair and balanced, and goes into the many of advantages of them; and why they’re still an absolutely terrible idea. open.substack.com/pub/iandunt/...
ID cards are a terrible, terrible idea
Many people I admire believe firmly in ID cards, or have grown to accept them. This is why they're wrong.

I’m an immigrant. No, I did not come here illegally.

As a child, we were able to settle in the UK, thanks to the EEC/EU; as a🇫🇷&🇨🇭citizen, I was able to get indefinite leave to remain. 13 years ago, I naturalised as🇬🇧. (I also lapsed my🇫🇷citizenship - 🇨🇭only lets its citizens have 1 other nationality.)

Nearly half of British adults believe a majority of immigrants to this country in the last year came here illegally.
Just under a third (32%) believe the majority came here legally and a further one in five (20%) don't know.

I always try to be thorough!

I’ve actually previously written about the Bellona Club. From Sayers’ description, as a rather faded place on its last legs in the 1920s (& from my other work on the economics of clubs), I imagine it would have vanished by the 70s. clubland.substack.com/p/clubs-in-p...

'Doctor Who' has nothing to do with the world of private members' clubs...does it?

A deep dive into how the 3rd Doctor came to have a London club - and which one - and how it was probably the 1st Doctor who first put his name down for it.
