You're reading Moby Dick because it's the flavour of the season.
I'm reading Moby Dick because my kid's favourite cetacean is the Livyatan Melville I.
We are not the same.

Compelling read so far. Will add notes, if any to this thread.

Judging by the number of Library reservations, seems quite popular.

January 2025 is looking to be a bumper month for stargazing!

We've highlighted several relatively rare events that require a telescope. If you don't own a telescope, check our website for stargazing events, astronomy groups and observatories near you (UK).

Entropy is one of those formulas that many of us learn, swallow whole, and even use regularly without really understanding.

(E.g., where does that “log” come from? Are there other possible formulas?)

Yet there's an intuitive & almost inevitable way to arrive at this expression.

Do you struggle to explain:
1) What Saros Cycles are?
2) How the precession of the moon's orbit works?
3) Just what the hell a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit is?
Well worry no more. Because there's a print for that.

I don't think I've already shared this experiment since videos arrived on BS.

Those wheels have approx. the same mass.
Made in my lab after an experiment I saw in the Science Museum, London.
The most difficult part was finding a glue good enough to hold the hex nuts on the CDs...

It's been snowing in the UK and the road gritters are out in force, begging the question:
Have you ever wondered where that grit actually COMES from?
The answer is more magical, beautiful and fascinating than you probably realised.

I have this simple device made by a technician in my high-school, in order to explain resonance to my students. I slightly change the rate at which the whole structure is rocked, so that the frequency matches one of the 3 pendulums' frequency.
