But pretty much everything gets “filled in after the fact” when writing. You never know how many drafts and rewrites it’s going to take before you get to the finished version. Those bracketed placeholders can let a writer know where specific weaknesses in their narrative need working on.

At present, not all announced titles for the new year are being offered on Netgalley yet. And a lot of SF is being marketed as litfic, interestingly. It takes a bit of looking, but the books can be found.
