You were implying that atheism was a dogmatic position, and that agnosticism is the more “respectful“ one, which is the misunderstanding. Theism and atheism refer to a person’s beliefs; gnosticism and agnosticism refer to what someone claims to know. For instance, I’m both atheist *and* agnostic.

Gah. I hate having to slide in here, but… I don’t think I have ever pretended to have definite knowledge of all of life‘s deepest questions simply because I don’t believe “an invisible magic deity” is the answer to any of them. Atheism on its own is nothing more than rejection of theistic claims.
