It's the literal recording of the events which make it 'history', right?
(maybe this is a mistaken initial premise)
So I would agree that the volume of recorded modern history has definitely outstripped the sum of extant record of premodern history,
but does that necessarily mean more happened?

Not me misinterpreting his meaning when he addresses "readers" not as the 'audience in general', but that he's talking to "people who read" as opposed to those who are too lazy or illiterate to do so, as if he was exhorting the educated elite
