These sorts of "no reason" evictions have no place in a modern rental system. These people are suffering the consequences of government changes in 2022 which will benefit no-one until mid 2028.

The 2022 changes should have applied to tenancies in being.

Is there a barrel bottom that hasn’t been scraped yet in the determined drive to attack the character and professionalism of the Left candidate who’s doing well in polls? Of course Catherine Connolly BL acted for clients on a normal disinterested basis!

Steen and her cadre preparing the narrative that this election, which has taken place under the same rules as the last 14 elections, is somehow illegitimate.

Straight out of the far-right playbook. Trump would be proud.

Am only catching up now on the animal cruelty story about FG candidate for President, Heather Humphreys.

She sent a letter to the Dept of Agriculture, about a live legal case regarding ‘stomach churning’ animal cruelty, on behalf of the farmer involved. The case was then dropped.

I'd missed that. That's.....odd.

If nothing else, dodgy landlords can sleep a little less easy now, and that's a net positive.

Almost everyone has a story about being ripped off by a landlord and remembers the feeling of powerlessness that comes with that.

The problem for Jim Gavin is that he may now become a focus for people to have a sliver of revenge.

This is the worst possible answer. Just staggering in its awfulness.

Short of dramatically pulling a cloak over his face with a sinister guffaw, I'm not sure how he could have done worse.

No, but it does require that the President scrutinise bills from the Oireachtas and refer them to the Supreme Court if he thinks they are repugnant to the Constitution, and some of those bills may be in Irish.

Gavin says he went to the Gaeltacht, but has lost his fluency and says the Constitution doesn’t state that the President must speak Irish.

Ó Cuív hits out at Taoiseach over Connolly convict criticism - 'I'm surprised somebody didn't contact me first'

Former Fianna Fáil minister Éamon Ó Cuív has defended Independent presidential candidate Catherine Connolly and said he does not agree with criticism from the Taoiseach over her hiring of a woman convicted of firearms offences.

Mr Ó Cuív said he was “surprised” that Micheál Martin did not speak to him before publicly making comments on the matter, given his role over a number of years in visiting republican prisoners and in recommending the woman to Ms Connolly.

Ursula Shannon (also Ní Shionnáin) was hired as an administrative support worker for Ms Cononlly in the Oireachtas in 2018, shortly after she was released from prison after serving over four years for unlawful possession of firearms and possession of ammunition.

Ms Shannon had been linked to the Éirígí – a republican organisation which opposed the peace process. She was not granted a Dáil pass while a vetting process was being conducted, but was signed in and out by Ms Connolly.

Earlier, the Taoiseach said this indicates “a very serious lack of judgement” on Ms Connolly’s part.

“In terms of someone who has apparently served four and a half years in prison for possession of firearms, and is also a member of an organisation that did everything to undermine the Irish peace process, that would indicate a very serious lack of judgement,” he said.

But Mr Ó Cuív, a former Fianna Fáil TD in Ms Connolly's Galway constituency, said he disagreed with these comments, and asked “how can we talk seriously about reconciliation if we make a puff of smoke over this?”

“I am surprised somebody didn’t contact me before [Mr Martin] made those comments,” he said.

The former Galway West TD said Ms Shannon had a PhD in social linguistics, that he had visited her a number of times in prison and had conversations with her on socialism, the economy and political philosophy.

She was not someone who posed any secur…

Statement from Catherine Connolly following reports of Irish citizens among those abducted by Israeli forces this evening.
“Israel’s illegal seizure of boats participating in the Global Sumud Flotillas mission to bring humanitarian aid to the starving people of Gaza is another brazen breach of international law.

“It has been reported that Irish citizens are amongst those abducted by Israeli forces. The Department of Foreign Affairs must immediately demand the release of all those taken illegally by the Israeli military.

“There have been enough words. The Irish government and other governments must take action to face down Israel’s genocidal campaign and to protect all those on the flotilla.

“All those abducted must be released and the flotilla must be given safe passage to complete its humanitarian mission to ensure the people of Gaza receive the food and other humanitarian aid they so desperately need.”

Admirable from Catherine. A prison sentence shouldn't mean that a person is ostracised from public life for ever.

The person in question was clearly qualified for the role and had served the sentence handed down.

Another aspect to consider is that the Connolly campaign is bringing local left wing party branches together to canvas for a single candidate. Having SD/LP/PBP canvassers knocking on doors lead by a SF councillor (and vice versa) could have a lasting impact in local areas.
