Hello BlueSky!

I'm an environmental writer & advocate living on Jilkáat Aani, also known as Haines, Alaska. I also spend time in Corca Dhuibhne, the westest of West Kerry, Ireland, where I write, improve my Irish, and play with dogs.

I write creative nonfiction, poetry, and advocacy pieces.
Sunset over the Blasket Islands and the Three Sisters, West Kerry, Ireland. This is the view that inspires my writing the most.

Important context for out-of-state folks: all of these communities are off the road system. Think about all the struggles communities face to evac in more typical situations when you can drive some place safe, and then imagine there's no road and no flights. That's what we're talking about here.

The city of Kotzebue is under mandatory evacuation orders. That's as the community prepares for flooding the National Weather Service warns could be worse than last year's, which led to dozens of evacuations and two families losing their homes.

Sending prayers to relatives along the coast of Alaska. It’s so maddening to see us all suffering effects of the #climatecrisis & dealing with an Administration hellbent on destroying #Alaska - pushing #AmblerRoad, oil drilling in the #ArcticRefuge, #Willow, pulling back funding for science, etc.

A powerful fall storm hitting a swath of Alaska’s coast triggered evacuations in several communities including Kotzebue, where officials urged residents to relocate to a shelter before conditions worsened.

Many sea stars begin life as young fairy-like creature (called a brachiolaria) that float through the open ocean. Eventually, a small star forms within them (here in yellow). The fairy-like brachiolaria sinks under the star’s weight, and the star pops out!

I got an email from Claddagh Records saying if you pre-ordered the album you'd get a link to pre-order the jersey.

My thoughts are with Kotz. I'll be looking out for any calls for mutual aid and hope others will share info if they see it. #AlaskaSky

The cult of Kamala Harris. Anyone in the US who dared to utter criticism of her in any form during the election got treated the way Dr. McAuliffe did in these threads. The difference of course being it was at least the right country/election/candidate!

Also, I have one last can of cranberry lime Polar seltzer in my fridge that I’ve been saving for a sufficiently special occasion. No Polar in rural Alaska, sadly!

A wonderful community radio station with programming in Yup'ik! Rural Alaskan radio stations are a lifeline to the communities they serve, and they're disproportionately impacted by the de-funding of public broadcasting.

I saw Steve this weekend, and it is indeed very good. Now I have to wait another 1-2 years for the next good film to come out.
