Humanities needs working class kids. We don’t see university as a stepping stone to a career and, because of that, bring a completely different attitude to the classroom. Studying English empowered me, but my being there also mattered. I saw (and said) things differently, and that was valuable

‘Priority courses’, give me strength.

Working class kids deserve to study classics and history and art as much as anyone else.

'Graeme Atherton, head of the Ruskin Institute for Social Equity (Rise) at the University of West London, said the policy “is giving with one hand and taking with another” and will “exacerbate” the problems being faced by humanities and arts departments and disadvantaged students.'

First day back in the classroom and I’m already ruined. Three back-to-back seminars is not for the faint-hearted. Send help (ideally in the form of crisp diet cokes) 🥱

Had such a lovely evening with my fellow CMS PGRs celebrating submitting my thesis! ⭐️ #medievalsky

Anyone know the collective noun for a reunion of medieval PGRs?!

One of the things we’re proudest of at the CMS is our amazing PGR community! We have such an active, supportive, and accomplished group of PGRs. We can’t wait to see what they get up to this academic year! #medievalsky

The point of going to university is to explore research and knowledge, not to start an effing business. The skills and experiences gained might help you start a business, as might the interactions with the people you meet, but it is not the purpose of a degree.

Fed up of this manure.

An actual quote from the Secretary of State for Business and Trade

Too often people go to university to ‘explore research and knowledge’

Look forward to Wes S saying 'too often people go to hospital to have operations' or Heidi Alexander saying 'too often people go to the station to catch a train'

Beautiful! The only upside of the arts library being shut (for the last three months of my PhD 😡) is having a reason to use this gorgeous library!

I am once again pitching my romantic comedy:

- two academics start dating
- discover they are each other's terrible reviewer
- hijinks ensue

Christ's sake, Chicago, I'm just trying to go for a walk.
An engraved paving stone that says "publish." The word appears twice, in mirror image, so you can see it whether you're coming or going.

Did you know that in medieval England, short plays often accompanied celebratory feasts? On 27th June at Winterbourne Barn, come and see the 15th-century ‘Life of Job’ for one night only: feasting followed by high drama, music, dance and acrobatics. Tickets at www.ticketsource.co.uk/winterbourne...
Brightly coloured manuscript illustration from Les grandes chroniques de France de Charles V, showing a banquet featuring a play of the siege of Jerusalem (BnF MS fr 2813, fol. 473v). Medieval kings and bishops are seated at a table with gold vessels; in front of the table there is a boat with two passengers, a tower, and various besieging soldiers, including one who has fallen down wounded or dead.
