The @wmo-global.bsky.social Global State of the Water Resources 2024 Report includes a contribution from #ECMWF. We provided data from both ECMWF’s ecLand and Copernicus EMS GloFAS, and 10 other global hydrological modelling systems, to build a global picture of changing river discharge in 2024.🧵

🌊 This heatwave was made more intense by record ocean temperatures.

Anomalies and extremes in the average surface air temperature between 17 June and 2
July 2025. The extreme categories (‘coolest’ and ‘warmest’) are based on rankings of average
temperatures for the same 16 days during 1979–2024. The other categories describe how the
temperatures compare to the distribution of these temperatures during the 1991–2020 reference
period. ‘Much cooler/warmer than average’ - cooler/warmer than 90% of temperatures.
‘Cooler/warmer than average’ - than 66% of temperatures. ‘Near average’ - within the middle 33%.

It will run side by side with the traditional physics-based Integrated Forecasting System (IFS).

Learn more about how climate conditions impacted rivers and flooding in Europe in the #ESOTC2024. The distinct east-west contrast in climate conditions in 2024 was also clear in river flow data across Europe, and the year saw widespread flooding. #C3S

2024 saw the most widespread flooding since 2013, with 30% of European rivers exceeding the 'high' flood threshold and 12% exceeding the 'severe' flood threshold

2024 was the warmest year on record with an average global temperature 1.6°C above pre-industrial level.

It's the first year to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial level, with every month but one since July 23 surpassing this threshold.

Climate data from @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social shows, it is virtual certainty that 2024 will be the warmest year on record and the first calendar year above 1.5°C.
This does not mean the Paris Agreement has been breached, it means ambitious #climateaction is more urgent than ever
