Jacinda Ardern brings the climate debate back to basics: for some climate states, it’s about whether they will exist at all in a few decades’ time.

Pedro Sanchez, Spanish PM: “We cannot make a trade off between defence & international aid.”
shaunspiers1.bsky.social
Keir Starmer refers to the far right march, which “sent a shiver down the spine” & (referring to Reform) says “we’re in a battle for the soul of this country about what sort of country we want to be.” More of this, please

Good to hear the PM stress the importance of clean, homegrown energy to ensuring energy security & independence, as well as tackling the (huge) challenge of climate change.

"The evidence is increasingly clear that making better use of resources has great potential to boost growth and support the innovative, futureproofed businesses of the future, as well as protect the environment."

I hadn't seen many flags until tonight - I don't get out much - but a stretch of the A2 around Chatham & Gilingham has them on every lamppost. I can understand why some people feel threatened. There's also something fundamentally unEnglish about this flag waving. What happened to quiet patriotism?

In her desperation for growth the chancellor will support any building project, however damaging. But #Gatwick & other airport expansions will bust carbon budgets unless we can decarbonise aviation. That's a real UK growth opportunity. Where's the plan?

It’s great to be at @libdems.org.uk conference “climate and nature day”. It would be good to see a similar focus from the other parties, rather than Reform’s climate denial, the Tories’ opposition to climate action & the chancellor’s indifference to nature. @ldnc-uk.bsky.social

"By adding home solar, battery storage and heat pumps to the hugely successful legislation that covers salary sacrifice EVs, the government has a real chance to deliver on its manifesto promise of warmer homes, lower bills, green jobs and a cleaner energy future."
green-alliance.org.uk
The high upfront cost of tech like heat pumps and home solar is preventing some households from making the switch and reaping the benefits of cheaper bills.

In this blog, Thom Groot, CEO at The Electric Car Scheme, says salary sacrifice could help solve the problem.
Could salary sacrifice unlock greener homes for less?

“I think Ed Miliband is the most dangerous man in Britain”, says Claire Coutinho. Wow! That's some statement to make on the weekend a racist thug led a big march in London.

Of course, the there's not a word in the interview on what to do about climate change...

Labour's energy policies threaten to decimate Britain's oil and gas industry, push up bills and put our national security at risk, warns Claire Coutinho

I look forward to the conclusions of the inquiry into why a rally called by a violent thug ended in violent thuggery.

Given the context and the crowd, despite Musk’s weasel words, this was a call for violence against the British state, from a foreign national who controls a major propaganda engine, and has engineered it to monetise hate

What's Nigel Farage's problem with solar panels?
shaunspiers1.bsky.social
"The chancellor must commit to tax reform, not just tax rises", says the head of the CBI. I agree, but in doing so Rachel Reeves should consider how to turn a tax system geared to a high carbon economy to one that supports the economy & society of the future.

Why is UK progress towards net zero so important if our contribution to global emissions is proportionally low?

In this clip from our latest podcast, @fionaharvey.bsky.social, environment editor @theguardian.com, outlines one of the key reasons.

We need "a broader discussion around energy bills. This must include how to pay for policy & network costs in a fairer way; the gap between electricity & gas prices which discourages people from switching to more efficient electric heating systems; and the use & extent of windfall taxes".

England's measure for fuel poverty is inadequate. If using Scotland's threshold, 3x as many would qualify - that's 9 million people struggling to pay bills.

@sophieoconnell.bsky.social outlines how we can better recognise and address the issue with a social tariff 👉
Why a social tariff would help solve fuel poverty
The cost of living crisis has outpaced low incomes and social security, leaving many households unable to afford essentials and forced to make the bleak choice between heating and eating. Energy de…
