To do list for this moment:

1. Establish a discipline of calling your Congressional reps every day.
2. Join an ongoing organizing effort in your local community.
3. Take on at least one personal habit that expands your capacity for attention, compassion, and commitment.

it is very minor in the grand scheme of things but the 2024 election result also really amplified the menace beneath eric adams's hilarity. much harder to laugh at the guy now.

My statement on the two year anniversary of October 7, 2023.
“Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.

In the aftermath of that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government launched a genocidal war: adeath toll that now far exceeds 67,000; with the Israeli military bombing homes, hospitals, and schools into rubble. Every day in Gaza has become a place where grief itself has run out of language. I mourn these lives and pray for the families that have been shattered. Our government has been complicit through it all.

This must end. The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through diplomacy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.

These last two years have demonstrated the very worst of humanity. We must answer it by modeling the very best: a relentless pursuit of our higher ideals and an unwavering commitment to universal human rights.”

There is no question of whether we as a society can afford to have every child cared for by someone. We can, because we already do. The question is whether we want to keep the burden of paying for it primarily on parents, where it currently is, or whether we want to spread it more broadly.

I recently reported on an ICE officer who was publicly reprimanded and “relieved of his duties” after shoving a woman to the ground in an NYC immigration court. Well, he’s back.

DHS did not respond to a request for comment.

I’m pretty skeptical that governments who cannot muster the economic and political power to build out wind, solar, and grid improvements will somehow be able to do this for a wave of new nuclear technology.

Just unspeakably ludicrous that the only people whose rights are harmed by domestic deployment of the military are those specific persons who are physically assaulted.
anthonymkreis.bsky.social
The idea that courts have some special deference to the *domestic* deployment of military personnel despite an entire statutory regime is absurd. The Founders would have rejected the idea that courts must take a back seat and wait for the public to be injured before tort law would protect liberties.

Yes I think it is! also I’m 99% sure the amanita was a blusher (it did indeed turn pink where I broke it off) but I 100% don’t fuck with amanitas.

Not as many bird species coming through here so getting into fungus spotting instead
A man’s pink hand holds a shiny orange-yellow mushroom, detached from the ground. It’s a larch bolete. A man’s hand holds an amanita mushroom by the stem. It’s a very mushroom looking mushroom, with a curving white stem with stipe, white gills, and a darker top. Pink mushrooms sprout from a leafy forest floor A brown fan-like mushroom with pale edges grows from a mossy log.

Miller’s apparent elevation to shadow president and his seeming intent to declare an end to the constitutional order would, in any other administration, be treated as a executive branch meltdown that was immensely embarrassing for the president and requiring Miller’s immediate removal

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

Why doesn't the US have a general strike? Well you can point to culture or whatever but I think structure is of not immediate use here: does the US have organizations and institutions it can use to network, organize and mobilize a general strike? No.

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.

Federal officer blasts chemical spray into vocal but nonviolent Portland protester, video shows

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.
