TLDR: SSA commissioner should only answer to the President, but now effectively will also answer to the IRS and Treasury, or at least the potential is there, given that COSS will now be in a subordinate position to the man running both those departments. I’m sure others will have more to say about

And this is before we take into account the multitude of other ways there are conflicts of interest right now (eg Bessent has interests in Argentina which we’re currently bailing out, Bisignano is handing out SSA contracts to his former employer, FiServ, that will give them Treasury access, etc).

Also important to note that currently there are 4 members of the Board of Trustees; Commissioner of SSA, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Labor, and Secretary of HHS. There’s supposed to be two public appointees appointed by the president but those two seats are vacant right now.

Simultaneously creating a convoluted relationship between the now 3 agencies where normally there would be clear independence and separation. There is not supposed to be so much overlap between the Treasury and its 2 largest spenders/contributors, SSA and the IRS.

So now, the Commissioner of SSA technically works for the Secretary of the Treasury while they both serve on the SSA Board of Trustees as equals as well as both being Cabinet members. You see where the conflicts start to come from right??? So this will start to decrease the independence of SSA while

Now I’m probably gonna get this next part wrong but I’m working fast. There is a Board of Trustees at SSA whose role is to essentially oversee SSA finances and monitor the trust fund. One of those members is the Secretary of the Treasury. Another is the Commissioner of SSA. This is half the board.

So today they announced they created a NEW POSITION called CEO of IRS which they announced will be filed by Frank Bosignano, current SSA commissioner. So it’s not a position that’s existed before and is designed to be like the second in command to the IRS commissioner.

Scott Bessent is also acting commissioner of the IRS since their last one was removed because Trump stopped liking him (translation: he told him no to something and ManBaby Pedofuhrer hates that word so he had to go). But being head of both IRS and Treasury is already a bit of a conflict of interest

Frank Bisignano is the COSS(commissioner of SSA) who came to us from financial land (most recently CEO of FiServ) and seems intent on enriching his former employer through government contracts, specifically SSA contracts, which is a separate thread I need to do.
