Which of these characters’ stories most deserve an epilogue or exploration in #StarTrekStarfleetAcademy?
February 5, 2026 at 9:19 PM
Star Trek: Academy is the perfect narrative framework to celebrate and deepen all other eras of #StarTrek. While Star Trek: Prodigy was a primer for the franchise and drew from other series, SFA’s mission is to deepen Starfleet by training cadets in the glow of past heroes and histories.

“No consequences,” Shaw mutters. “No regard for the mess he’s potentially made of the future for the sector. Just like some feelings-driven child, Picard just picks and chooses which rules to follow.”

“No,” Shaw says dusting off his hands. “In his wisdom, he had a chat with his crew over—snacks. And then he compounds the issue and solves the geological nightmare on pre-warp species’ hellhole planet.”

He looks over at the pretzels, noticing the oozing lollipop chards stripping the sides.

“Is that even possible?” Shaw asks, lifting the tray and placing it in the replicator. “Bake at 200 C for 15 minutes. Engage.”

The replicator glows with intensity as he sits back down at his table.

“Oh, but the great Captain didn’t do that, did he?”

“Picard had him shipped off to Daystrom for a look under the hood,” Shaw says.

He scoops up bits of crushed lollipop in his hand and sprinkles it atop a tray of unbaked pretzels.

“I mean, how could this—officer’s programming just—whoopsie—and break the most important protocol we have?”

Shaw crushes the lollipop with the flat blade of his knife, pressing downward with the palm of his hand.

“And when they find out their naive android broke the Prime Directive,” he says as a crunch echoes out from beneath the blade.

“Uh, just a couple more hours,” Stamets replies. “We’re—a little shorthanded down here.”

His eyes land on the spanner lying on the console. He grips it, lifting it up with a soft smile.

Stamets’ eyes fixate on Reno.

“Uh, you gonna get that, bobcat?” Reno asks. She taps her tricombadge and vanishes in a bolt of light.

“Yes, Detmer?” Stamets replies.

“The Captain wants to know when we’ll be ready to transport the spores for the refit,” Detmer states.

“I get it,” Reno says. “It takes a lot of emotional fortitude to say goodbye to a mentor.”

Stamets laughs. “Mentor?”

“Or foil,” Reno acknowledges. “Whatever the label, they push you to grow. Am I right?”

Stamets looks at her, his brow raised.

“Commander Stamets?” calls Detmer over the comm.

“Yeah?” Stamets says, looking up. “I don’t know, I like a conventional backup when things go horribly wrong with our new tech.”

“Like duct tape and the spore drive,” Reno replies, smirking.

“Um I wasn’t there because I—I don’t do goodbyes,” Stamets says.

“You, uh, weren’t at that sickeningly sweet hallway farewell thing they did for me on my way to the transporter room,” Reno begins. “Which—ya know—with these puppies,” she says tapping her tricombadge. “is wasted space.”

“I sealed a Tellerite’s lung with this baby—among other things. She and I—“ Reno adds. “We’ve seen things.”

“Right,” Stamets replies, returning his attention to his console.

Reno approaches the console.

Reno steps out of a Jeffries tube with an engineering case slung over her shoulder.

“I—oh hi—I thought you already left, Professor,” Stamets remarks from behind the spore console.

“Forgot my favorite spanner,” Reno says.

Look at this merch from Star Trek. It has NO resemblance to anything Academy logos or aesthetics seen on screen. How do they keep missing time and again with merch?

I miss them.

@abbymsommer.bsky.social and I had an awesome time chatting about “Pen Pals” and “Vortex” and discovering some unexpected connections between these episodes in the early seasons of their respective series.

Which of these Klingons would be an interesting mentor for Jay-Den? #StarTrek

“Vox in Excelso” is a unique Klingon story in the franchise, one that honors the species’ past yet charts a new future for it. A Klingon culture stripped down to its core values is rife with storytelling potential. Telling this story through Kraag is compelling.
