After a really busy, crazy week, and a long day doing chores outdoors today, F-cat has decided that it is #caturday and I shall not be doing anything else productive for the moment.

Grateful today for the simplicity of cooking split pea soup from scratch - and the fact that you can just let it cook. Work late? No problem - split pea soup will happily cook a few more hours than planned and be all the better for it.

In other news, I'm eating split pea soup for dinner.

Weekend #2 of "go get a vaccine and take it slow" is in the books. I do sometimes wonder how much of my reaction to vaccinations is strong immune response, and how much is "hey, you actually gave yourself permission to have a slow weekend and not do all the things" acknowledgement and appreciation.

1/2 So like a lot of authors today, I woke up to learn that pirated examples of my work are being used without my consent in the 'Books3' dataset fed to generative algorithms by several major corporations. Fellow writers, check for yourself at this link: full-stack-search-prod.vercel.app?search=

My aunt, who was way ahead of her time, took me to work with her long before "take your child work day" was a thing.

Many years later, the company I had started working for had a "take your parents to work day". So I did, and it was lovely. I'd have taken my aunt too if she'd been local. #family

It has indeed been a very long, very busy week, but hey, we've made it to Friday. Which is shaping up to be a very long, very busy day, but it's Friday, and that's worth celebrating. Congratulations everyone! Celebrate with coffee, tea, or whatever beverage seems best to you.

I miss having a cat who actually knows what to do when a flying insect or other pest finds its way inside. #cats #houseflydrama

This has been a very long day that feels like it's been a very long week, and it's only Monday. Sigh.

Mangling a Jane Austen quote with intent:

It is a truth universally acknowledged that there are some days where there is not enough coffee in the universe to cope with all the things. Today is shaping up to be one of those days. #wednesday #coffee #havingaday

It is spazz o'clock here, and the cats are literally bouncing off the furniture. Thankfully, they mostly know better than to bounce off the keyboard. #cats

For those interested, I posted nearly the same thread/question on meal prep hacks when it's hot/smoky outside on Mastodon and on BlueSky.

Mastodon: I got multiple favorites and four different hack ideas/shared experiences.

So what do you do when you want to do meal prep for the week, but one of the things you want to make requires hours of cooking and it's hot out and you can't open windows because smoke?

In my case, I took advantage of access to a garage with power and the wonders of a crock pot. #cooking #mealprep

Is #FlowerFriday a thing here on Bluesky? Eh, whether it is or not, it's Friday, and there are flowers, and that's a good thing.

Shout-out to the whimsical deity who sent four elk down the street this morning. I really needed a dose of pure enjoyment and wonder after the last few days.

The local municipality keeps this park well-mowed. There are, however, rugosa roses growing in banks around parts of it. And to paraphrase a famous phrase, nevertheless, the roses persisted.

These rugosa rose shoots are at best 2 cm or 1 inch high. And yet they not only persist, they bloom.
