Polk County Jail has a 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. That partnership authorizes local law enforcement officials to perform some immigration enforcement functions, including preparing removal paperwork, interrogating people who have been arrested about their citizenship status and comparing their biographic information against U.S. Department of Homeland Security databases to identify people who may be eligible for deportation.

Her family showed up with a copy of her birth certificate, contacted tribal leaders and lawyers and made pleas on Facebook. Finally she was released. According to the Nobel Prize candidates at Polk County Sheriff’s dept. it was a “clerical error.”
