The first is Howard Middleton, the first Black Port Commissioner in Houston who served from 1978 to 1996 and passed away in 2023. Then, you'll hear from the first female Houston pilot, Holly Cooper, now retired.

Captain Holly Cooper joined the Houston Pilots in 1994 as the group’s 151st pilot and the first woman to begin training as a deputy. In this new SHIPS film, you'll hear excerpts from two oral history interviews.

By 2001, the Houston Pilots led the way in hiring minorities and women, and a few years later it formed a nonprofit called Anchor Watch, to offer scholarships to maritime students in need and boost opportunities for minority and women candidates.

In 1904 her funnel was lengthened by 23 ft to improve draught and made this ship easily recognizable. She commenced her last voyage from Rotterdam to New York on April 24, 1915, and then went to the Swedish American Line and was renamed STOCKHOLM.

The POTSDAM was a 12,909 grt passenger liner built by Blohm & Voss. She was 550 feet in length with a beam of 62 t and had accommodation for 282-1st, 210-2nd and 1,800-3rd class passengers. Launched on #OnThisDay in 1899, she sailed from Rotterdam on her maiden voyage to New York on May 17, 1900.

It has a rather unusual model design with drawers that were integrated into hull, containing small furnishings and fittings that illustrate the interior layout.

William G. Muller is a distinguished maritime artist and one of the few remaining people with first-hand memories of working for the Day Line, as a quartermaster during the days of steam navigation. Muller has been a member of SSHSA for over 70 years.
