Her son is two years behind, but she wants to do "minimal prep"-- oh but she'll oh-so-nobly and sacrificially "take the time to go over lessons."

She's only used things designed to *supplement actual teaching*. No wonder they're years behind.

Math for delayed learner with autism My son is 9 but at beginner 2nd grade level math. He struggles to understand the concepts and tries to memorize everything(he cant though because he has poor memory). We have tried khan academy, abc mouse, and one other curriculum that was textbook but cant remember its name to save my life. Ive considered math u see but afraid it wont be well rounded enough. He works best with videos and manipulatives. Id prefer to do minimal prep but will take the time to go over lessons with him. Im average at math, so my confidence is good, but I sometimes struggle to explain concepts in a way that my son can understand. Hence the videos and visuals being a neccesity for math. Thanks guys

There are two common “themes” that Unschooling currently encompasses. The first, is the true meaning. A completely self led learning experience. Wherein the child’s education, (or lack thereof,) is left entirely up to the child themselves. No outside influence from parents or guardians is pressed upon the child to encourage or enforce education. The child is free to learn WHAT they want, WHEN the want, HOW they want & IF they want. The parent’s maid [sic] role is that of the question answerer. The experience provider. The guide, & the stable foundation from which to garner information when asked. This approach encourages a willingness to ask, be curious, delve into interests, explore opportunities, and to ultimately be a self starter who trusts their OWN minds, desires & abilities.

How do others handle feeling like a complete failure? My 19 year old can only do very basic math, and cannot spell or write and argues about everything. The 12 year old argues about everything also. I am so burned out in doing absolutely everything with zero help. How does everyone else make this work?

Facebook post in "Unschooling Littles: Non-Coercive Homeschooling & Unschooling": just came to vent and find some people who have experienced this too. My mom talks to me about my oldest (8 in December) not reading yet more and more frequently the older she gets. She is making progress on her own with pre-reading skills and I told my mom that and I've even started doing a little more intentional stuff at home since my daughter expressed desire toward that sort of thing. Yesterday my mom called and she bought a reading program and wants to come to my house twice a week at set times and do this program with my daughter because she feels bad for her not being able to read yet. She doesn't want to drive out and then my daughter not want to do it so she wants it to be like "Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2pm we do a reading lesson". That is so not how we roll. 😂 I told her I am willing to let her try one time at least but there can be no forcing and if my kid wants to stop she is allowed to. I doubt my daughter will sit at set times for this. 😂 Also, I told her I don't love the idea of having to be home and dressed (me) at certain times every week. I highly value the flexibility that Unschooling brings. But I am game to try it one time. She tried to do this with another thing a while back and it only lasted 3-4 times so I'm hoping it fizzles out like that. Unless my daughter is a big fan and then it's fine by me.

A note on homeschool illiteracy: when homeschool parents say their child "can't read" they don't mean "they're not at grade level." They really do mean *can't. read.*
Parent in "Raising Lifelong Learners" facebook group: My 8.5 year old doesn't read yet but wants to learn (and wants to try in a more formal fashion) and I ordered Hooked on Phonics to try with her. She doesn't like games on the phone though so my question is: will she still learn enough with just the books and such but skipping the app? In a comment: At this stage in my life I don't have a lot of time during the day to commit to sitting down with her. Hooked on phonics seems like I can actually handle it a couple times a week... [goes on to ask for a comparison to All About Reading]
