This weekend I installed Draw Things, a local AI image generator, on my Mac. Making images was like pulling a slot machine lever. You can queue up 100 image generations from the same prompt in a row. You can enter the machine zone and watch each image resolve itself. It's a wretched thing.

Going through the backlogs of @panicworld.com and in an episode about mobile game ads they struck on a profound notion-- that all internet content is pornography now. Not necessarily in a sexual sense, but in the notion that it produces direct stimulation without the pretense of substance.

The trouble with making media with AI is that all value derives from human effort, from the story of how human effort brought it to be. If the inherent story of your work is "I pushed a button and got it 20 seconds later" there's no value there.

Every time I watch ALIEN I am transfixed thinking to myself "there's no way they've left themselves enough room to get the third horizontal line in that E without it looking like a squashed-in mess!" but no, every single time there it is, and it's beautiful. Most tense part of the movie tbh.

It's extra rancid on the iPad because it opens each instance of Preview as a separate window, now that iPads have windows. It's like they forgot that the best part of Preview is you can have a bunch of related things in the sidebar and quickly browse through them!

In iOS and iPadOS 26 Apple made it so you can't open images in Files, you can only open images in a separate Preview app, and Preview doesn't allow swiping from one image to the next. It's insane. Literally making me use two apps to have a worse experience than one.
