We got Vincent Price, but neither Peter Cushing nor Ingrid Pitt were ever on The Muppet Show because I'm apparently not allowed to die of joy.

Seriously if you like lesbian vampires do not sleep on this movie. Ingrid Pitt is in full force and it's magnificent

My all-time favorite Hammer horror film is definitely The Vampire Lovers. It's a big, schlocky, gay-ass adaptation of Carmilla that's got all the lesbian vampires 1970 has to offer.

It's very much not too late! I recommend starting here with Dark Science, it's the beginning of the ongoing story and by far the bulk of Dresden Codak: dresdencodak.com/2010/06/03/d...
I do also have earlier comics before that, which you can find here: dresdencodak.com/archives/

I wish half the movie was just Tina and Kevin "I support my gay daughter" Nash.

it really has been amazing how much one person in a frog suit destroyed their fantasy visuals over the past week. this wouldn't work everywhere but Portland, you are doing amazing sweetie

Honestly DOA may be my actual favorite, it's so much fun and I watch it almost annually

Oh absolutely, that's the cardinal sin of the film, imo

I think that's a big reason why I like it. Because, for many reasons, Enter the Dragon should be a much better movie than it actually is

From my baby days getting into comics, he always, always felt like a guy who was laser-focused on selling the idea of himself, which meant his stories just come off as wretched. And yeah, when I finally checked out Good Omens I kept thinking "I could just go read a Discworld book instead."

It's my queer cyberpunk comic about lesbian cyborgs overthrowing a capitalist nightmare city that's a world's fair that never stopped expanding!

You can start reading it here, I update weekly! dresdencodak.com/2010/06/03/d...

It gets that a fighting game movie needs to be big, goofy spectacle, because fighting games are big goofy spectacles! I have a soft spot for the DOA movie for similar reasons, but Mortal Kombat I think pulls off the camp better. Maybe because it has puppets.

My favorite trivia is that test audiences complained there weren't enough awesome fights, so they extensively reshot scenes with Robin Shou (Liu Kang) as the choreographer, which ended up being the best parts of the movie. That's how we got a fire-breathing skeleton decapitated with a buzzsaw!

I was trying to think of my favorite video game movie, and it may actually be Mortal Kombat (1995). This is probably due to 1) me never really playing or caring about Mortal Kombat and 2) it basically being a remake of Enter the Dragon, but more awesome because it has puppets.

I'm watching Curse of Frankenstein for the first time (I love Hammer horror but somehow always missed this one). I love Peter Cushing's take on Victor. From the moment he's on screen you understand that he's someone who, through immense privilege, can't comprehend his actions having consequences.

I promise not to turn this into a rant about how Walt's "entertainment first" directive cements every Disney feature as a pretty, soulless, Product, and how Fleischer's Gulliver is fundamentally superior to Snow White, but you can imagine that I did if you want.

Also the kind of person who'd call it "cozy" are thinking of Disney or Disney-influenced features, which are the greatest offender in the sensory overload dept.

Worth considering too that Miyazaki was heavily inspired by Soviet animation, which heaven forbid gave your brain time to digest things.
johannamation.bsky.social
I’m convinced the main reason Miyazaki films have a reputation for being “cozy” in the West is because he actually writes and animates long moments of quiet into his stories, whereas Western animated films are usually a nonstop parade of loud music, sounds, noises and neon colors.

Miyazaki: in this movie two young girls (one is a toddler) are uprooted from everything they know to start new lives near the rural hospital their mother is in; she is possibly dying of TB. Their dad works several hours away and they are largely unsupervised.
