I'm watching Curse of Frankenstein for the first time (I love Hammer horror but somehow always missed this one). I love Peter Cushing's take on Victor. From the moment he's on screen you understand that he's someone who, through immense privilege, can't comprehend his actions having consequences.

I promise not to turn this into a rant about how Walt's "entertainment first" directive cements every Disney feature as a pretty, soulless, Product, and how Fleischer's Gulliver is fundamentally superior to Snow White, but you can imagine that I did if you want.

Also the kind of person who'd call it "cozy" are thinking of Disney or Disney-influenced features, which are the greatest offender in the sensory overload dept.

Worth considering too that Miyazaki was heavily inspired by Soviet animation, which heaven forbid gave your brain time to digest things.

I’m convinced the main reason Miyazaki films have a reputation for being “cozy” in the West is because he actually writes and animates long moments of quiet into his stories, whereas Western animated films are usually a nonstop parade of loud music, sounds, noises and neon colors.

Miyazaki: in this movie two young girls (one is a toddler) are uprooted from everything they know to start new lives near the rural hospital their mother is in; she is possibly dying of TB. Their dad works several hours away and they are largely unsupervised.

Miyazaki survived the bombing of Utsunomiya as a child. His family escaped in a car, but left a neighbor and her daughter behind to save themselves. Miyazaki regrets this, and said this has stayed with him and shaped his film making. He hopes his audience will learn the courage he lacked in 1945.

It's kind of hard to convey to a normal person how much work I do each day to be a full-time cartoonist. Sure, it's a "dream job," but I have to be okay with that job being most of my waking life, with zero benefits or security.

I mean, I *am* okay with that, but dang comics should pay better.

Yeah, that was a letdown. It's like they spent all their "good character writing" points on Midna.

I'm surprised there's never been a mainline Zelda game where Ganon has a hot second-in-command whose loyalty ultimately breaks. Like Kagura from Inuyasha or Ashram in Lodoss War.

One of the most gruesome things about the JJ Abrams Star Wars is how it fully embraces the Great Man theory of history, ignoring the grounded, materialist underpinnings of Lucas's films. In the OT the Rebels were based on the Viet Cong. With Abrams the resistance is based on NPCs waiting for a Jesus

If you want to write convincing revolutions in your sci-fi, you have to study 20th century revolutions. You have to understand where and how colonialism has been excised. You have to know the means by which real world people have successfully overthrown capitalism. That ain't the French Revolution.

As much as folks might not want to believe it, artists who sell their work cannot survive exclusively on platforms that cater to primarily other artists. The Circulating The Same Five Dollars™️ model can't feed us or pay bills for long. We need places where we can be seen and discovered.

I will always side-eye people who will only recommend/talk about Lain as if it's just some "psychological" sci-fi story, because apparently horror means lowbrow. I see you, cowards. Grow up!

Something I love about Serial Experiments Lain is that it is unabashedly a *horror* series. Horror isn't just people getting mangled or jump scares, it can also be the isolating fear from queerness and neurodivergence, presented in just enough of a heightened way to allow you to explore it safely.

Harthrow's probably the most dangerous (he's weirdly cunning and has almost killed Kim twice), but he's also usually a bit goofier. Sirius is the most bluntly violent and cruel, which is expected of a human trafficker. And Stolas is basically one sword fight away from being a Utena villain.
Amon Harthrow revealing that he's infiltrated a left-wing group to disrupt it and sow terror (Dark Science #95) Sirius Harthrow calmly complaining about uppity teenagers after ripping her arm off. (Dark Science #168) Aurem Stolas smugly bribing officials to label Vonnie and his fiancee Asmodea as "cousins" because Asmodea dared to go on a date with a girl. (Dark Science #129)
