Join us as Assistant #Curator of Vertebrates @ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿NMS! Large collections of #birds & #mammals + very active specimen prep = cool place! The ad doesn't say, but I say there's a good chance of prolongation beyond 1y. Hurry up and apply/spread the word: careers.nms.ac.uk/job/748553!

Yours truly and our mounted Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) specimen The bird collection store, busy with visiting researchers, mounts, and in the background our volunteers who capture data from the specimen labels. It's not always this packed, but we do have a fair number of volunteers and visitors. Blue Tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) in trays in the cabinets. The collections spaces are pretty new, fresh, and functional, which is not always the case for museum collections... A tray of African raptor eggs to illustrate the breadth of the bird collection, which holds som 70K skin specimens, 60K egg clutches, and 10K skeletons.

Whenever I have fieldwork I tend to go to Cotswolds, Trespass and Mountain Warehouse. They are probably the easiest to find in any typical UK cities. I have great experience with Cotswolds staff in particular! Although I haven't tried myself I've heard good things about Decathlon as well.

NEW PAPER: Dartford warblers use nest materials based on local habitat, but material type doesn't affect insulation or breeding success—suggesting flexible, functional nest-building across environments.

Today is World Swift Day

In a recent study, we found that swifts across Europe are incorporating plastic debris into their nests. We surveyed 500 nests across 7 European countries, and found plastic in many of them.

Did you know? Installing nest cups in your eaves could save your local House Martins around 10 days of nest building time when they return from their long spring migrations! Discover the science ➡️ bit.ly/HouseMartinStudy #Springwatch #Ornithology

Not our usual Fly Day flyer…

But when the Bee-fly shows up, you make an exception.

These fuzzy little hoverers deserve their moment.

#FlyDay
A close-up of a Bee-fly hovering at a delicate cluster of pale blue Forget-me-not flowers. The Bee-fly is round and fuzzy like a tiny brown pom-pom, with long spindly legs and a stiff, straw-like proboscis outstretched into one of the blooms. The soft-focus background is a dreamy mix of greens and whites, adding to the springtime feel. The whole image has a light, airy atmosphere, a charming moment of tiny nature in flight.
