It's been a little over a year since I got elected in Lawrence Hill, and I thought it might be helpful to list out what Yassin and I have been up to!

If you think I've missed anything important, either in the to-do list or the already-done list, let me know!

Absolutely horrific hate crime attack last week against two innocent men. If you know anything please get in touch with the police or Crimestoppers - we need to catch the assailants. This behaviour is not acceptable and racism is never welcome here #Bristol

Comments denying the existence of trans people are really not cool. There are trans / non binary people working for the council and they shouldn't have to listen to discrimination and hate speech in their workplace

Why are transphobes so obsessed with everyone's genitals? It's pretty creepy tbh
shonajemphrey.bsky.social
Not when it comes to discriminatory comments and dangerous rhetoric that reduces a woman to what she looks like. You wouldn't expect people to have to "listen respectfully" to offensive comments against any other oppressed group.
shonajemphrey.bsky.social
Hi, if you're referring to the transphobic comments from yesterday, then yes I left the council chamber when they were being made. I don't think hate speech has a place in our elected spaces, and I think those comments were needless, and actively harmful to trans people.

Just got confirmation in Members Forum that #Bristol #libraries budget is protected for next year!!! 🥳

Labour scaremongered residents about this, even though they slashed the budget by 25% when in power.

Us Greens will continue to push to get libraries open for longer where residents need it most!

This is really impressive work going on in Barton Hill by grassroot organisations, connecting families from various cultures. I wish everywhere had this "find your village" mentality! As one participant said, “I think other communities can learn from Barton Hill”

For anyone who lives or works in the area, the next community forum is Thurs 25th Sept in the evening at Easton Christian Family Centre (next to the Leisure Centre). Police and council are both in attendance at these meetings, which are trying to find ways to stop these sorts of incidents.

This part of Stapleton Road is currently cordoned off, between roughly Clifton Place and Armoury Square, following two incidents with knives. One person taken to hospital. If you are trying to go through the area this afternoon I would recommend an alternate route if possible. #Bristol

We must tackle inequality.

Your bills are not high because of migrants.

The NHS is not crumbling because of migrants.

It's because of politicians who only serve the super rich. 👇🏼

Are you a resident of Lawrence Hill with a council-related issue?

We hold regular councillor surgeries on the first Tuesday of each month, 12-1pm, alternating between the Wellspring Settlement and Junction 3 Library.

No need to book - first come, first served!

Really pleased there will finally be a step-free way for people to access platform 2 at Lawrence Hill station - ridiculous that it's been this way for years! I worked with WECA around this to argue for it - it's a no-brainer! #Bristol #trains #publictransport

The current draft says "Bristol has sufficient coverage of essential pharmaceutical services"

If you disagree - you have til 31 Aug to fill in the survey!

It's a long document but if you're short of time, just read the conclusion and comment on that!

...because politics affect our daily lives, and very specifically affect whether a centre like this can legally even open in England?

The government has seen the scheme in Glasgow. They've seen the evidence from other countries. This isn't down to a lack of information. It's a political decision.
shonajemphrey.bsky.social
We heard from experts in the field, including from the centre in Glasgow already saving lives!

And saw very moving artwork made by the families and friends of those lost to drug overdoses - people who might still be here if they'd been offered a harm reduction approach, rather than a punitive one.
shonajemphrey.bsky.social
Brilliant meeting last night - we discussed the possibility of England's first Overdose Prevention Centre in Bristol

The national Labour government is dragging their feet to give the necessary legal permissions, despite overwhelming evidence that this works!

🏳️‍🌈 Pride is a protest ✊ 🏳️‍⚧️

This year it's so obvious how much it's needed, as we face threats to roll back LGBTIQA+ rights in the UK and globally

It felt so important to be at ‪@bristolpride.bsky.social with my community, standing shoulder to shoulder with our trans siblings. #Pride2025
