Glad to be a plus one at the announcement of the nominees for the first Ilse Schwepke prize for Women’s Travel Writing. Winner to be announced in Frankfurt on 17th October. Feeling: uxorious. Hoping: victorious.

I see I’ve written ‘Wednesday’ as if that’s not yesterday 🙄. One of those weeks where so much happens that an hour seems like a day. Oh well.

I’m passing on any messages so thanks for emailing them or posting them here (or elsewhere)

That’s brought so much joy (“Melvyn, here’s a message from a ship’s crew - here’s one from Mongolia - here’s a student in Iceland who’s heard every show). It’s like an elixir.

We have the best listeners. Thank you.

One of the glories of working on In Our Time is that listeners around the world constantly share their love for the programme.

They know what they got, to paraphrase.

So many tributes to Melvyn since Wednesday and I was especially moved by Esther Rantzen and her reference to Joni Mitchell and Big Yellow Taxi (Don't it always seem to go/ That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?) but not for the obvious reason.

Slightly short of words today but happy to echo this from John who, with Teresa and Phil, slipped in under the wire for what turned out to be a fitting close. Great edition www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

And I have no idea about his digestion, only that according to Birkin his favourite meal was boiled in the bag cod with parsley sauce so who knows.

I paused briefly, before explaining that it was not me. Anyway that was 19 Rue Jacob, the address on the advert for constipation cures and somehow I feel Serge Gainsbourg would have liked that coincidence

And I saw Jane Birkin walking along the pavement towards me and then step right up to me to ask ‘Is it you?’

Which may have been my most Parisian experience up to that point.

I was standing outside her flat in Paris waiting for my wife who was already inside waiting to interview her

On a ferry across the Baltic and saw this retro French ad for constipation remedies (underneath the children’s burgers) and something in it immediately reminded me of a very brief encounter with Jane Birkin many years ago

Oh, all civil-looking, but you just know they were on the Luther Insulter just as you were offering tea or coffee. ergofabulous.org/luther/?
Screenshot from the Luther insulter webpage. It has a picture of Martin Luther and the quote: You stinkmouths.

From On Marriage Matters, pg. 302 of Luther's Works, Vol. 46

We still record in BH and I took this photo after our Civility programme which reminded me to check on the uncivil Luthers (who still looked as if butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths)

Don’t apologise - happy to help - this (with Russell Foster) may offer some insight into how listening interacts with circadian rhythms (not unlike clearing your mind to stop hiccups as in the recent lungs edition) www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b...
BBC Radio 4 - In Our Time, Circadian Rhythms
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss circadian rhythms.
