Happy new year! The book is out- You Are Here: Nine More Stories, a new short story collection including a brand-new novella. Dragons, smugglers, witches, Indian mothers, meddling lesbians, telepaths who love to troll you, space! 🌈🚀🏴‍☠️🪔 🐉

available most places, paperbacks at Amazon, links below.
Book cover: text, YOU ARE HERE: NINE MORE STORIES, IONA DATT SHARMA, on illustration of grim South Asian woman with greying hair, orange hair scarf and shoulder tattoo of a violet, holding a floating Earth Blurb text: It is not a sin, to love a wild thing…

A witch falls out of the sky; a dragon joins the resistance; a smuggler of magical trifles loves a girl she can’t have. A spaceship lights up for Diwali; an arch in the woods leads to wonders; and in a small community in lunar orbit, for no reason understandable by normal people, romance has been abolished.

Here are nine more stories, of hope and passion, grief and bureaucracy, and how you can’t go home again but it doesn’t mean you’ll never be found.

(In a white room, full of ghosts, a woman cries and will never be found.)

You Are Here is a follow-up to the author’s first collection of short fiction, Not For Use In Navigation (2019). This new volume collects eight more stories, plus an exclusive previously unpublished novella, Wish You Were Here. Published 1 January 2025.

I use my work Outlook calendar and to-do list for anything that happens in my working hours, inc personal things, and a physical calendar on the kitchen wall for everything else. I need a better personal to-do list system but I've never hit on a good way to do it.

I haven't seen reality TV. Like Big Brother, Love Island, any of the talent shows, Strictly Come Dancing, Great British Bake-Off, anything.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

jazzing up my new gammacore device with sticker art and nail polish! I love cluster headache folk art, it’s always depicted with SKULL and KNIVES and DEMON
a cranial nerve stimulator device with cluster headache-themed sticker (with knives going into someone’s skinned skull!) and nail polish stripes on the top in rainbow colours

This is beta mindset, Gareth. Your spouse is your co-worker. Your parents are your boss. Your kids are employees. The only relationship you should get "emotionally attached to" is the one you have with that AI chatbot who loves you because of the new branch of physics you've invented together.

You're supposed to be emotionally attached in a relationship. That's what a relationship is.

you know, I think our joint undergrad obsession with Angels In America might have been this for me.

you're welcome! text me if you want to talk it through at some point, you wouldn't be the first STEM person I've helped with writing in the social sciences for the first time a bit later in life.

do you mean, how one would write a formal persuasive paper in economics/political science? or do you mean oral argument? or maybe both?
singlecrow.bsky.social
yes! yes that's it, it feels wild and innovative but somehow not... modern. it's in conversation with Russ and Le Guin, not Leckie and Vo. thank god you're here this weekend, omg, I have so many THOUGHTS.

am I the only person who thinks this whole story could happen quietly on a backwater Murderbot planet.

but these are good faith questions, I want to meet this book where it is, because I have never read anything quite like it and it is extraordinary.
