Coming back to the confessions, the "I finally snapped" scene w/ Mgr Wicks is a HUGE plot hole. Saying why would be a spoiler, but if you've seen it, you need to know that Jud would not move past the first point about what he had learned as quickly as that. The parishioners' bit pales in comparison.

It's weird for a film to make confession a major thing, but to show only one valid absolution.

The church stuff is bad. It seems it was originally set at an evangelical church and then the costumes changed, and a confession motif half-heartedly added, to make it "Catholic".
