I mean, it wouldn't be (when was it ever?), but it's still worth thinking about.
I generally think it quite important to remind what the Chinese death toll from an invasion would be when we usually talk only about Taiwanese deaths--perhaps if the Chinese public was aware, this would be a restraining force on the CCP leadership

China would suffer 100,000 fatalities in Taiwan invasion: Report - Focus Taiwan
China could sustain up to 100,000 military fatalities if it invaded Taiwan through amphibious landings, resulting in its ultimate retreat, but it would likely gain control over Taiwan's offshore Kinme...

This is all very familiar in everyday life here now.

hey remember when a bunch of middle-aged drunk korean lawmakers climbed the locked gates to the national assembly to hold an emergency session after the president gave illegal orders to the military, all of which ended with said president being sentenced to prison

I finally got round to WAKE UP DEAD MAN. The locked room puzzle is interesting, but the film was disappointing overall.

GLADIATOR in a packed London cinema on opening week.
2nd row for THE DARK KNIGHT in Hong Kong behind a front row of loud teenagers who turned out to be vocal in the best way -- "Woah it's Hong Kong!" "I can see my house!" -- and losing their minds at the bit with the truck.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

Many are pressured or incentivised to vote, particularly if they work for Chinese SOEs.

While it’s illegal to encourage others to cast spoilt ballots, doing so yourself is OK and ballots are anonymous. If this number goes up it suggests people feel pressure to vote but don’t believe in the process.

We must support reform now? That's new.
1/ "While we mourn the victims and support those affected, we must also be united and support reform together... I emphasise everyone should cast their decisive vote," Hong Kong's John Lee told reporters, as the "patriots only" polls opened following November's deadly Tai Po blaze.
