Of course the big paper on Azhdarchoid phylogeny comes out while I'm at a museum on a research visit (looking at Azhdarchoid cervicals, obviously) but now I'm back at the hotel so it's time to write a proper thread! 1/28

We almost lost the last wild horses. At the end of the 1950s, there were only 12 Przewalski's horses left.

After decades of conservation efforts, there are now a couple thousand horses living in zoos and conservation areas in several countries, from Spain to China.

Since its discovery, Longisquama has been suggested to be a pseudosuchian, dinosaur, drepanosaur, or misc. basal archosaur on the way to birds. Today, its close relative Mirasaura was described, demonstrating that the two of them are actually drepanosaurs: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The syrinx itself can fossilize, and has done so in Vegavis and Presbyornis, but we haven't found any outside of Neornithes. However, ossification of the syrinx is highly variable in palaeognaths, and it doesn't look like any have a completely ossified syrinx. This implies...
