people say “you have to judge slaveholders by the morality of their own time, no one knew it was wrong” and then you read about some Quaker named, like, Mr. End-Slavery-Now who was also a feminist and a vegetarian and advocated the overthrow of capitalism.

I see people saying “why should we give free lunches to schoolchildren?” and I think some folks truly have no idea what it’s like to grow up in poverty, never knowing where your next meal is coming from, forever being one paycheck away from eviction.

Seems important that in Fahrenheit 451, books were still “available” in single-paragraph summaries—“read Hamlet in five minutes!”—but the books themselves had been banned for being too difficult. Tech boosters see a warning and think it’s an instruction manual.

The number of Americans with dementia is expected to double by 2050, to fourteen million. One way you can stave off cognitive decline is by keeping your mind sharp, and you do that by reading, writing, crafts, hobbies, and continuing to challenge yourself intellectually.

Important work by the DOJ Civil Rights Division. Without question, the heavy & heroic lifting has been done by locals in OK. But it matters to have the U.S. government affirm what really happened. In the coming years more people will understand why establishing the public record is so important.
“The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, in which a prosperous Black neighborhood in Oklahoma was destroyed and up to 300 people were killed, was not committed by an uncontrolled mob but was the result of “a coordinated, military-style attack” by white citizens.”
