so it's pretty challenging to get an idea of the shape of a project or the timeline or wheter i can execute an idea or any of that cuz i don't really know what i'm doing haha. but it's been so so fun to learn

and i'm more limited on a coding level where i think i can make a character feel good to control but i don't know how to make like a Boss Fight or a Conveyor Belt or a Screen Transition That Saves The Player's Velocity and so on

that's not in a self deprecating way btw, i'm very proud of how much i've learnt and achieved in game dev while going through a very stressful period of my life, i just also am realistic that i'm at the stage of art where like. i don't know what colours go together. i don't know how clothes Work

i'm not interested in writing a 800K word behemoth anyway so basically anything i write is within scope. i tend to try and give myself new challenges each project - i'm not good with large casts so i'm writing a large cast, but with game dev i'm not good at *anything* so idk where to go exactly

it's kind of the classic i guess of wanting to make something that's bigger and more like the games i love, but trying to draw the lines on what is realistic to scope, which is something i don't have to think about when writing novels.

it's really cool! at the same time though, those games are both notably light on narrative and are able to create such evocative spaces through extremely good visual language which i simply do not have the skills for yet

i've been really enamoured with how Ooo contextualises itself as taking place inside a bird and then almost instantly throws you into levels that make zero sense for that context and don't even make logical sense connecting to one another. the cave leads to a library leads to an ice dungeon hahaha

Pseudoregalia levels do all fit broadly within the castle motif of course but hopefully you get what i mean, it's not pretending to be a real place in the same way something like Hallownest or even Celeste mountain is.
November 30, 2025 at 3:12 AM
i've kinda been drawn to creating settings that are less concrete in general, less about inviting a player into a believable and cohesive *world* and more a believable *space* - more like Pseudoregalia/Ooo

not to say that those are trite or anything - my Dream Project I've Had For Years is very much in the former camp, but it can sometimes feel like a cop out. written poorly it's like, damn, the act of beating the carefully designed video game is like learning to love myself? i don't think that's true
November 30, 2025 at 3:12 AM
also despite thinking about it all my life, i'm only really now trying for the first time to do Visual and Ludological Storytelling, which are totally different kinds of skills. it's unsurprising i think that a lot of platformers have opted for Mental Health Metaphor or Overcoming Challenge conceits
